The life of Bilal needs to be re-examined from early Islamicate sources that need to be recovered to illustrate how the indomitable spirit of faith deals with subjection, racism, religious persecution and political marginalisation. Bilal is not a token, but a symbol. Bilal helps make the Muslim Ummah truly universal.
