Mara Leichtman is Associate Professor of Anthropology at Michigan State University. She is author of Shi‘i Cosmopolitanisms in Africa: Lebanese Migration and Religious Conversion in Senegal (Indiana University Press, 2015). She also co-edited the special journal issue The Shi‘a of Lebanon: New Approaches to Modern History, Contemporary Politics, and Religion in Die Welt des Islams (2019). Dr. Leichtman was a visiting Fulbright Scholar at American University of Kuwait (2016-2017), where she launched a new research project that examines Islamic humanitarianism in the Gulf directed to global economic development, in particular in Africa.
