Culture matérielle et pratiques dévotionnelles dans les sociétés chiites

Najaf , au cœur du chiisme
Pour abriter le mausolée de ‘Alî, le premier imâm, Najaf est appelée « la plus noble » (al-achraf)des villes ; ses habitant se disent « les fils de Alî » (awlâd ‘Alî). D’autres populations y séjournent : d’une part, les étudiants en sciences religieuses qui viennent y puiser un savoir hérité des imams et des grands oulémas qui ont fait de la ville une pépinière de savants et le centre de la marja‘iyya. ; d’autre part, les pèlerins qui viennent faire leur visite pieuse au mausolée. Une organisation élaborée permet à chacun d’y trouver sa place, d’y circuler, d’y accomplir les rituel – d’y vivre à l’ombre de l’imam. Le mausolée « s’exporte » : il diffuse son savoir, mais devient aussi un objet, tout cela pour permettre de reconstituer le centre ailleurs, dans les périphéries.

Fragments d’iconographie alide en Asie du sud
L’iconographie chiite a récemment émergé comme nouveau champ d’études qui a rapidement été marqué par l’ouvrage d’Ingvild Flaskerud intitulé Vizualizing Belief and Piety in Iranian Shiism (Continuum, 2010). En Asie du sud, les représentations iconographiques de ‘Alî, et de ses descendants, dépassent le cadre des deux principales écoles chiites : duodécimaine et ismaélienne. En effet, ‘Alî est également vénéré dans les milieux soufis, où l’iconographie apparaît quelque peu différente de l’iconographie chiite, y compris dans les milieux hindous qui se réclament du soufisme. Cette présentation envisage de proposer une rapide introduction à ces iconographies alides d’Asie du sud.

De-centring Shiʿi Islam
In the introduction to this special issue, we make the case for ‘de-centring’ the study of Shiʿi Islam, conceptually, spatially and sociologically. After first noting the essentialization of Shiʿi identity within the contemporary public sphere, we question its spatialization within the modern world of nation-states and area studies, and contrast the physical and human geography of Shiʿi Islam.

Workshop: Sectarianism in the Middle East – Think Tank
Sectarian conflict and polarisation has become a key feature of Middle East politics in the aftermath of the Arab uprisings of 2011. This workshop looked at some of the key drivers of this, such as the troubled legacy of foreign intervention, state failure, regional rivalries between Saudi Arabia, Iran and others, ruling strategies of authoritarian regimes as well as the spread of identity and sect-based political movements.
