1.You are kindly invited to participate in the “24th International Congress of the German Middle East Studies Association (DAVO)” combined with the “33rd Deutscher Orientalistentag (DOT) / German Oriental Studies Conference of the German Oriental Society (DMG)” at the Friedrich Schiller-University in Jena on 18-22 September 2017.
All forms for the registration of your participation as well as your papers and panels are now available on the website of the DOT (www.dot2017.de/en). Please register your accommodation during the Congress as soon as possible because some of the hotels are already completely booked (www.dot2017.de/en/travel-hotels/hotels/).
Scholars interested in presenting a paper in one of the Open Panels should contact the specific organizer(s) of the panel by e-mail until 28 February 2017. The abstract of your proposed paper should not exceed 200 words.
All other scholars who want to present a paper or who have organized a closed panel should meet the following deadline:
– Until 31 March 2017: Registration of the abstracts of all papers and panels via the website of the DOT www.dot2017.de/en. This is also the deadline for the individual registration of participants at a reduced fee.

2. CFP – Ernst Herzfeld Society for Studies in Islamic Art and Archaeology – Reassessing Nineteenth-Century Art in Islamic Countries

For your paper (20 mins in German or English), please submit an abstract (300 words maximum, plus a
one-page abbreviated CV) before March 1, 2017 to Dr Maximilian Hartmuth:
maximilian.hartmuth@univie.ac.at. Acceptance and a preliminary programme will be announced in early April. The conference is scheduled to start the evening of July 6 and to end July 8. Optional fieldtrips to Islamic art in Vienna are planned for July 9. The conference fee of 50/25 EUR is waived for members of the Society.
3. The University of Leuven, Belgium, is one of the oldest European research universities (founded in 1425). The Faculty of Arts is currently offering an open rank professorship in the field of politics, culture and society of the contemporary Middle East. A PhD must be in hand when the appointment begins. The successful candidate must be prepared to provide instruction in the field of politics, culture and society of the contemporary Middle East as well as participate in the language acquisition of Modern Standard Arabic at all levels of the teaching program. The teaching load is approximately 40%. At the University of Leuven, the teaching language is Dutch. A candidate who does not know Dutch must reach the EFR C1- level within three years (after commencement of the appointment). In the meantime, teaching in English is allowed.

The University of Cambridge Centre of Islamic Studies invites applications from current Masters and PhD candidates to present their research on issues pertaining to Muslims in the UK and Europe, from any discipline. The postgraduate symposium, taking place from 12-13 May 2017, will be a platform for students to present and exchange current research on any topic in this field in a dynamic forum. While historical or theoretical context is valuable, we invite papers also to present, analyse or interpret research findings, data or material. The symposium will take place at The Moller Centre, Cambridge. Accommodation will be covered by the Centre of Islamic Studies and bursaries will be available for travel within the UK.

15. Special Issue of New Media & Society:
Media, Identity, and Online Communities in a Changing Arab World[1]

Objective and Significance
This special issue will examine the role of new media in the construction of online communities in the Arab world. It is important to understand how user-generated content empowers these new publics and the novel communities established by user comments on social media and news websites. Specifically, there is a need to research these online communities and their perceptions of the role of user-generated content to contribute to politics, and potentially engage other citizens in the public debate. For these reasons, this special issue seeks to answer the following questions: What characterizes these online users’ communities? What are their motivations? How do they perceive the role of news websites’ commenting functions in promoting political engagement? The editors welcome contributions that are theoretically informed and empirically rigorous, employing qualitative and/or quantitative research methods.
Proposed Topics:
The following is a list of suggested topics for analysis. Articles could develop a subject in connection to any of the following themes:
– Theorization of the Online Arab Public Sphere
– User-generated Content and Participatory Cultures
– New Media and Social Movement Theory in the Context of the Arab Uprisings
– Arab Spring and the Mobilizing Potential of New Media
– Media Convergence and Citizen Journalism after the “Arab Spring”
– The Political-Cultural Division in the Public Sphere
– Network Cultural Production in the Digital age
– Digital Divide and Participation in the Public Sphere
– New Media and the Construction of New Arab Identities
– Regulation Policies and Standardization Processes, and Their Impact on Institutional and Individual Uses of Technology
Theoretical contributions in the fields of new media and the public sphere, presentation of ongoing research and empirical studies are welcome along with any of the abovementioned (but not limited to) themes.

Proposals should include the author’s name and affiliation, title, an abstract of 250-300 words, and 3 to 5 keywords, and should be sent to the e-mail address tiproject@dohainstitute.edu.qa no later than March 25th 2017. Selected submissions will be due 30 September 2017 and will be submitted directly to the submission site for New Media and Society: https://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/nms where they will undergo peer review following the usual procedures of New Media & Society. Note therefore that invitation to submit a full article does not therefore guarantee acceptance into the special issue. The special issue will be published in early 2018.
