1.3rd Conference of Central Asian Language and Linguistics

Call for Papers (Submission Deadline: November 3, 2017)

This fall, the Center for Languages of the Central Asian Region (CeLCAR) will be hosting the 3rd Conference of Central Asian Language and Linguistics (ConCALL-3) at Indiana University March 2-4, 2018.

Keynote Speakers for the conference include leading names in Turkic and Iranian linguistics, as well as second language acquisition and heritage language learning:

• Jason Rothman, Associate Professor of Linguistics, University of Florida
• Vera Gribanova, Associate Professor of Linguistics, Stanford University
• Pollet Samvelian, Professor of Linguistics, Université Sorbonne Nouvelle
• Mehmet Yavas, Professor of Linguistics, Florida International University

We are now accepting submissions for 20-minute paper presentations (with 10 minute post-presentation questions and discussion) on topics related to Central Asian languages and linguistics, including both the Altaic and Eastern Indo-European languages spoken in the region (among others), a diverse range of languages such as Azerbaijani, Dari, Kazakh, Kyrgyz, Mongolian, Pashto, Persian, Tajiki, Tibetan, Turkish, Turkmen, Tuvan, Uyghur, Uzbek, and more.

Submissions can include, but are not limited to:
– Formal linguistics (phonology, morphology, syntax and semantics, as well as their interfaces)
– Acquisition (first and second language acquisition)
– Language education/pedagogy, as related to Central Asian languages

Each abstract will be anonymously reviewed by a panel of scholars on a basis of interest, originality, timeliness, and relevance to the field, as well as reviewing the methodology and data collection methods and overall clarity and organization of ideas.

Submission should consist of an anonymous titled abstract of no more than 500 words (not including examples and references) submitted via EasyAbs (http://linguistlist.org/easyabs/ConCALL3) by Friday, November 3, 2017.

2. The Centre for Studies in Religion and Society at UVic offers fellowships ($5000 plus a private office for a year) to people in the thesis or dissertation phases of their graduate programs. Visits of less than a year are also possible.

These fellowships will allow students to be part of a vital interdisciplinary intellectual and social space in which they can focus on their writing. Over the last 25 years, we have been fortunate to host visiting graduate students from many other universities. Now, we are able to offer some funding to help support visiting students interested in completing their writing within a unique scholarly environment.

Most applicants would already have external funding from SSHRC or their home university. So, our funding would not cover all expenses, but it should make a significant contribution. The deadline for applications is the middle of November, 2017 and the fellowships would begin sometime after spring, 2018. ​

The Department of History at the University of California, Berkeley seeks applications for a full-time faculty appointment, open rank, in the History of the Modern Middle East/Arab World, with an expected start date of July 1, 2018.

The search is open to scholars of all regions and thematic interests in Modern Middle East history, with an emphasis on the history of the Arabic-speaking world.

7. The History Department of Washington and Lee University invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professorship in Mediterranean history, 500-1500 C.E., beginning September 2018.

Special consideration will be given to candidates who can situate Mediterranean history in a global context by contributing to the Africana Studies, Middle East and South Asia Studies, and/or Medieval and Renaissance Studies Programs. Candidates whose research focuses on issues such as, but not limited to, race and ethnicity, gender and sexuality, cross-cultural contact, religious cooperation and conflict, urbanism and/or empire are particularly encouraged to apply. 9. From the University of Arizona Libraries –
Digitization of the Shorish Collections has been completed! It consists of materials from the personal archives of M. Mobin Shorish, an Afghan-American scholar and advocate for the rights of the Afghan people during almost 40 years of uninterrupted conflict.

This is part of a larger project between the Libraries and the Afghanistan Center at Kabul University to preserve and create access to literature from the Jihad Period.

10. Stanford Iranian Studies Program Fellowship

CALL FOR APPLICATIONS for new fellowship open to scholars and artists working on the modern history of Iran, particularly the period of 1941 to 1979.
