1.MScT Scholarship in Islamic & Middle Eastern Studies at Edinburgh
The Islamic and Middle Eastern Studies at the University of Edinburgh is delighted to invite applications for a fees only MSc Taught degree scholarship for any of its programmes (Islamic and Middle Eastern Studies, Middle Eastern Studies with Arabic/Advanced Arabic, Advanced Arabic, Persian Civilisation).
The scholarship will be funded by IMES and will cover tuition fees at the Home/EU rate.

The Ernst Herzfeld Society for Studies in Islamic Art and Archaeology and the University of Strasbourg are pleased to invite you to the 14th colloquium of the Society that will be held at the University of Strasbourg, July 5–7, 2018. This year’s colloquium will be under the title The History of Material Cultures and Visual Arts in the Islamic Lands: Current State of research and New Perspectives.
The history of material cultures and visual arts in the Islamic lands is a relatively young research area, but it has proved to be capable of reflecting critically on itself. Thus, archaeologists, material culture historians and art historians rose to the challenge of Orientalism, questioning their position and perceptions. The field is still debating its very definition and scope: How useful is it to frame it as “Islamic” or “Islamicate”? Where are its geographic and temporal boundaries? What about “centers and peripheries,” and other historiographical models? The area of investigation is so wide, not only in terms of territory and timespan, but also of the types of material and artistic output involved that it requires constant updating of its methods and approaches, notably within the context of museums and exhibitions, and at a time when Islam has become a perennial topic of public debate.
The 14th colloquium of the Ernst Herzfeld Gesellschaft will be a general meeting on the current state and the new perspectives of research on Islamic material cultures and visual arts. Its main objective is to offer an opportunity to present ongoing research projects, to exchange ideas and views, and to discuss practices and experiences on various aspects of the archaeology, material culture and art history of the Islamic or Islamicate worlds. That is why we particularly encourage pre-arranged panels on specific sub-themes addressed from different angles, in the hope of generating unanticipated questions and consistent discussions.
The colloquium begins with a key-note lecture on Thursday, July 5, 2018. It continues with panel sessions on Friday and Saturday, July 6–7. A meeting of the graduate students is scheduled for Thursday, July 5, for which a separate call for papers will be circulated. The annual EHG members’ assembly will be held on Friday or Saturday afternoon.
Registration and participation are free for members of the Society. Other speakers and participants are asked to pay a conference fee (50 € / reduced 25 €). We kindly request that speakers and participants organize their own travel and accommodation. A list of hotels located in the vicinity of the colloquium venue will be sent in due course.
Pre-arranged panels will preferably include three presentations. It is of course also possible to submit individual papers, which will be presented in open panels. Each presentation should be limited to 20 minutes, followed by 10 minutes of discussion (or 30 minutes of discussion per panel). The colloquium languages will be English, German, and French.
Pre-arranged panels: Please submit a title and an abstract of no-more than 500 words presenting the topic and the aim of the panel, as well as a provisional list of speakers.
Individual papers: Please submit a title and an abstract of no more than 300 words.

Washington and Lee University invites applications for a one-year visiting assistant professor in Arabic, beginning 1 July 2018. This position carries a teaching load of 6 courses over three terms (two 12-week terms and one 4-week term): 2-3-1. Duties include teaching all levels of Arabic (first-, second-, and third-year), as well as advanced Arabic language courses that focus on media, conversation and composition, or topics in Arab literature, culture, and film. In addition to teaching responsibilities, the candidate will be expected to help supervise the Fulbright Foreign Language Teaching Assistant (FLTA), organize and assist with extracurricular activities, and contribute to the recently formed program in Middle East and South Asia (MESA) Studies.
Qualifications: Candidates must have completed at least an M.A. in Arabic Language (TAFL or a related field (e.g., second language acquisition, comparative literature, Middle Eastern Studies)). Preferred qualifications include ABD status or a Ph.D. Qualified applicants will have comprehensive mastery and fluency in Modern Standard Arabic and a dialect. The competitive applicant will have demonstrated experience in Arabic language pedagogy using the integrated approach in a North American or liberal arts context.

We are inviting advanced doctoral students and early career researchers (see definitions below) in the area of Islamic Legal Studies, to apply to participate in the USPPIP Summer School. USPPIP is a collaborative project of the universities of Exeter, Bergen, Göttingen and Leiden. The project (running from 2016 to 2018) aims to explore how the past is employed in Islamic legal thought and practice with a focus on the areas of violence, the state, gender and custom.
Eight fully-funded places are available on the Summer School. Funding will include travel to and from Exeter, accommodation and subsistence whilst in Exeter. The Summer School sessions will take place in the Institute for Arab and Islamic Studies. Participants will include members of the USPPIP team (drawn from the universities of Bergen, Exeter, Gottingen and Leiden), invited scholars and members of the Centre for the Study of Islam in the University of Exeter (see http://socialsciences.exeter.ac.uk/iais/research/centres/csi/).

8. Ferdowsi Tusi Millennium Memorial Endowment Persian Literature and Culture Graduate Paper Award
The Persian Studies Program and the University Libraries at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill are pleased to announce the Ferdowsi Tusi Millennium Memorial Endowment Persian Literature and Culture Annual Graduate Paper Award.
Deadline: The paper must be submitted by February 1, 2018.
We welcome papers from graduate students of various disciplines focusing on different historical periods of Iran. We are interested in interdisciplinary approaches. The paper should be written in English, double-spaced, unpublished, and not exceed 5000 words (excluding the bibliography). Please add a 200-word abstract on top of your paper and have your name and affiliation marked on all documents.
A committee of three reviewers will review the papers and announce the winner by the end of February 2018. The winner is required to attend the UNC annual Nowruz Celebration in late March and give a talk on the topic of their paper. All the economy class travel expenses within the U.S. and lodging will be covered by UNC.
