The Centre for the Study of Islam in the UK, based in the School of History, Archaeology and Religion, wishes to appoint to a three-year fixed-term post in the field of British Muslim Studies. Applicants will be expected to apply for and to conduct research in the field of British Muslim Studies and to support the public engagement activities of the Islam-UK Centre, leading to the publishing of work in high-quality journals and to pursue excellence in research. Preference may be given to those with a speciality in the sociology or anthropology of Muslim communities in Britain (especially method and theory); and/or Islam and Muslim communities in Wales.
This is a full-time post, fixed-term for three years.
Salary: £32,548 – £38,833 per annum (Grade 6)

Persianate Literatures as World Literature
We are putting together a volume on Persianate Literatures as World Literature. The volume is intended for publication in the “Literatures as World Literature” series of Academic Bloomsbury Publishing (Series Editor: Thomas Oliver Beebee), estimated to be published in 2019.
The book will explore the connections between Persianate literary productions and those of the rest of the world; advance comparative studies of Persianate literatures; and/or reread Persianate literatures with respect to globalization, transnationalism, and world citizenry—all with the overarching aim of foregrounding the interdependencies, interrelations, connections, and flows that expand Persian literatures beyond their mere locality and showcase their possible connecting and influencing of other local and
translocal narratives. As such, the primary focus of Persianate Literatures as World Literature will be on rereading Persian literary texts and authors in their “worldly” dimensions, situating such readings within—and ideally contributing to—ongoing critical debates on “world literature.” With this all-embracing aim in mind, we would be happy to consider submissions focused on topics including, yet not limited to, the following:
- Reading instances of Persian literature in order to contribute to ongoing debates in “world literature”
- Persian literature and globalization, transnationalism, and/or world citizenry; re-reading Persian literature in search of global perspectives; impediments to Persianliteratures’ path to the global stage; problems of language and translation; the problematics of the periphery and the center in “world literature”
- Comparative studies of Persian literature situated within “world literature” debates; studying the processes, in Persian literature, of textual influence, transformation, and/or travel towards the worldly domain; connections between Persian literary production and that of the rest of the world
- Relations and communication amongst the Persian literary traditions and genres, and how such relations help produce new forms of knowledge to understand Persian literary traditions and societies, yet also world literature and the global phenomena in general
- Rereading the Persian literary, artistic, and philosophical traditions in search of alternatives to prevalent (“Western”) literary theory and literary modernisms; the potentials and pitfalls of indigenous epistemologies
- The cultural chauvinism of literary criticism in Persianate cultures; the decentering of national identity politics – particularly ethnocentric nationalism – in literature and criticism; critical perspectives on scholarly journals in literary criticism published in the Persian-speaking world; the prison house of “literary theory” application
- Digital humanities and Persian literatures: prospects, possibilities, and limitations

3. Michigan Quarterly Review is currently seeking submissions
on the theme of Iran — its literature, culture, and history, particularly
perspectives on the 1979 revolution written in Iran or in the Diaspora. The
issue seeks to present a collective of voices and reflections by a generation
born in the shadow of revolution. The journal especially encourages
translations from Persian, Kurdish, Armenian, and Azeri languages spoken in
Iran.
Currently edited by Khaled Mattawa, Michigan Quarterly Review is the flagship
literary journal of the University of Michigan, publishing each season a
collection of fiction, poetry, book reviews, interviews, and essays on
culture. The guest editor for the Iran issue will be Kathryn Babayan,
Associate Professor of Iranian History and Culture at the University of
Michigan, and will be published in the Spring of 2019.

4. The Centre for South Asian Civilizations at the University of Toronto invites applications for a postdoctoral fellow in South Asian Studies. The appointment will begin on September 1, 2018. The post is for a period of 2 years with the possibility of extension after successful review.
Candidates working in any field of South Asian Studies are encouraged to apply. The successful applicant will have demonstrated expertise in one or more research languages and be able to work with primary source archives.
The Centre for South Asian Civilizations is housed at the University of Toronto Mississauga and is dedicated to interdisciplinary and critical engagement with the languages, cultures, religions, and histories of South Asia. While the primary responsibility of the postdoctoral fellow is research, the fellow will also be involved in Centre for South Asian Civilizations programming and will help foster intellectual community at the University of Toronto Mississauga. The position also includes the teaching of one 12-week course per academic year. The salary will be $42,000, which includes the teaching stipend.
Applicants must have successfully defended their doctoral theses by the commencement of the post, and no earlier than 2015. Applicants cannot hold a tenure-track or continuing faculty position at a college or university. Applicants may be citizens of any country, and graduates from any university. Successful international applicants must meet all Canadian immigration requirements.
The application deadline is June 11, 2018. Shortlisted candidates will be interviewed via Skype. Decisions will be made by July 2018.

Following the award of a European Research Council Advanced Grant, ‘Monumental Art of the Christian and Early Islamic East: Cultural Identities and Classical Heritage’, to Dr Judith McKenzie, the Faculty of Classics is seeking to appoint a Postdoctoral Research Associate in Early Islamic Monumental Art and Architecture to work on the project. This post will be fixed-term for 24 months until 30 September 2020, and it is anticipated that the appointee will start on 1 October 2018.
This project will analyse the monumental art (large decorative programmes of wall and floor mosaics, and wall paintings on buildings) of two areas of the former eastern Roman Empire which came under Islamic rule but which have never been the subject of an integrated comprehensive study: Egypt and Syro-Palestine (modern Syria, Jordan, Lebanon, and Israel/Palestine). It aims to determine systematically how the strength and nature of the local
Greco-Roman traditions and expressions of identities influenced monumental art in these regions during Late Antiquity (AD 250–750), the period of transition from paganism to Christianity and, in turn, to Islam. The project aims to define and distinguish between different strands of classical influence, both local and external (from the centres of Rome, Constantinople, and Alexandria). For the early Islamic period, it will also include other, eastern, influences. By investigating the roles of local artists and artisans as creators rather than imitators, and continuities of local workshop traditions, this project will transform our understanding of the artistic culture of the late antique Middle East.
Reporting to Dr Judith McKenzie, the post holder will carry out research on early Islamic wall mosaics and paintings for the European Research Council (ERC) Advanced Grant project, ‘Monumental Art of the Christian and Early Islamic East: Cultural Identities and Classical Heritage’.

VIII International Congress of the Spanish Society of Iranian Studies (SEI) to be held in the University of Tehran on November 4-5, 2018.
We are pleased to announce that this year our Eighth Annual Congress will be held in the University of Tehran on November 4 and 5, 2018 in collaboration with the Islamic Culture and Relations Organization, the Cultural Department of the Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran in Spain, the University of Tehran and the Iranian Society of Islamic History.
All members of the Spanish Society of Iranian Studies (SEI) are invited to attend as well as all experts and researchers in any field of Iranian and Persian studies throughout the world. The total number of speakers in this conference will be 30. Fifteen of them shall be chosen among outstanding Iranian professors and researchers living in Iran and the other fifteen shall be shortlisted from the foreign candidates. Each speaker will have 30 minutes to deliver the paper in any of the official languages for this Congress, i.e., English, Spanish and Persian.
Please send your abstract (max. 500 words) in any of the three abovementioned languages to the email address provided below. Please attach your CV. A scientific committee shall evaluate and shortlist the proposals. The deadline for sending your abstracts is JUNE 20, 2018. We strongly recommend that if you wish to participate in this international event, you should confirm your participation as soon as possible.
The sponsoring institutions in Iran have kindly offered to meet the accomodation costs in Tehran, up to three nights (including full board). For non-Iranian participants, in consideration for the expenses incurred to travel to Iran, the sum of 150 euro (or its equivalent in Rials at the official exchange rate prevailing at the time) shall be paid to them. Kindly note that the airfare and visa fees are to be satisfied by each participant. If you wish to spend additional time in Iran, the organization will not be able to make any provisions in terms of lodging or travel.

In an effort to recognize excellent doctoral research in the field, Middle East Medievalists (MEM) will award its first biennial prize at the annual meeting of the Middle East Studies Association in San Antonio, Texas, in November 2018.
