Graduate Student Symposium
April 4-5, 2019
The organising committee of the McGill Institute of Islamic Studies Graduate Student Symposium welcomes abstract submissions to their ninth annual symposium, to be held on April 4-5, 2019 at McGill University.
Our aim is to provide an opportunity for graduate students based in various parts of the world and approaching the study of Islamicate thought and life across time and space through a multiplicity of disciplinary and methodological approaches to share their work with the Institute’s faculty and students in an atmosphere of constructive and supportive criticism. We are pleased to invite graduate students at all stages of research and dissertation-writing related to Islam and Islamicate communities anywhere in the world (East Asia, South Asia, Africa, and the Middle East) to submit proposals for individual paper presentations.
Reflecting our department’s primary research areas, the symposium’s themes include but are not limited to:
- theology, philosophy, mysticism, and jurisprudence
- history, political science, and anthropology
- Urdu, Arabic, Persian, and Turkish literature
An abstract of 250-500 words and a one-page résumé should be sent electronically to miisscsymposium@gmail.com by December 30, 2018. Please include a tentative title for your paper and two or three keywords describing its regional and disciplinary focus, as well as your name, programme of study (MA, MPhil, or PhD), and departmental and institutional affiliation. 4. Conference: “Law, Islam & Anthropology”, Max Planck Institute for Social Anthropology, GAIR and RIMO, Halle/Saale, 9–10 November 2018
The discussion will range from the traditional domain of family-related regulations regarding commercial transactions to the perception of ethical norms in daily life. Questions such as actor-driven social distinctions and cross-societal processes of interpreting and applying Islamic texts and tradition will be emphasized.

5. Conference: “Mapping the Role of Intellectuals in Iranian Modern and Contemporary History”, Centre for Iranian Studies, SOAS University of London, 1 December 2018
Forty years after the Revolution, how can we evaluate the role of Iranian intellectuals in the history of Iranian modernity and in the process of the Iranian democratic debate? This question and many others are some of the key points this one-day conference will explore.

7. Professorship in Islamic and Middle Eastern Studies, University of Bern
Depending on his or her formal qualifications, the successful applicant will be employed as assistant professor with tenure track, as associate professor or as full professor. An assistant professorship requires an outstanding PhD and a second, advanced research project. Candidates for an associate or full professorship are required to have a habilitation thesis or equivalent qualifications.

15. Call for Papers for our one-day conference on the theme of ‘Leadership, Authority and Representation in British Muslim Communities’ to be held at Cardiff University on 21 January 2019. More information below. Please note the deadline for abstract submission which is 3pm on 7 December 2018.
This one-day conference brings together academics and activists to explore issues of leadership, authority and representation in British Muslim communities. Who speaks for British Muslims? How is authority construed, constructed and exercised in an age of mass media and the Internet? What internal and external factors shape leadership structures and modalities of representation for British Muslims living as a minority in a culturally Christian but largely secular social context? Where do leaders come from in a decentralised religious tradition lacking a priestly hierarchy? How do government discourses and media representations impact upon dynamics of leadership and authority in British Muslim communities?

Possible topics might include (but are not limited to):
- Issues relating to racism and discrimination.
- National narratives that create second-class forms of citizenship.
- Majority/minority relations in Israel/Palestine.
- A comparative study of Islamophobia and antisemitism, paying attention to particular national contexts e.g. comparing Israel/Palestine and the UK.
- Obstacles to progress into higher education or the labour market that are connected to race/ethnicity.

18. The University of Hamburg has 55 vacant positions (research associates) for the Cluster of Excellence ‘Understanding Written Artefacts’. The aim of the research of the cluster is to establish a unified, comparative and comprehensive approach for studying how the production of written artefacts has shaped human societies and cultures, and how these in turn have adapted written artefacts to their needs. The Cluster’s approach is structured into five Research Fields which unfold major aspects of the Cluster’s research. Since the material object is the starting point for the Cluster’s research, the scientific methods of material analysis will constitute the first field (Research Field A). In contrast to this field, but closely connected to it, the remaining four fields address cultural practices.
