5. Interdisciplinary Workshop: “A World of Realms: A Long View of Diplomacy and Spatiality in the Premodern Islamic World”, University of Antwerp, Belgium, 20-21 May 2021

In a world as mobile as the Islamic world, how did diplomatic practices take shape and what meanings were ascribed to “territory” by rulers, administrators and the envoys who moved back and forth between different courts? We welcome papers dealing with the many spatial dimensions of interstate contact. Along with contributions on the various major Islamic states in the Maghreb, Africa, Middle East, Europe, and Asia, we also encourage papers on pastoral nomad and peripheral groups and their interactions with Muslim polities.

7. PhD Scholarship on the Topic of “Islam/Muslims in Europe from a Sociological or Anthropological Perspective“, University College Dublin

S/he should have a background in sociology, anthropology and/or religious studies and be interested in undertaking qualitative or mixed methods research. 9. Best Article Award in Kurdish Political Studies, University of Central Florida (UCF)

For this award cycle, articles published in English in peer-reviewed journals in 2019 will be considered. The award is open to all disciplines under social sciences and humanities. The primary author of the article needs to be an untenured scholar at the time of the publication. The winner will be awarded $500.

10. Articles and Special Issue Submissions for Journal “Comparative Islamic Studies”

This biannual, peer-reviewed journal aims to publish studies of Islam and Islam-related topics that contribute to the field(s) of Islamic and/or Religious studies. CIS welcomes contributions along these lines from all disciplinary angles, be they political, anthropological, historical, ethnographic, literary, linguistic, etc. Along with standard comparisons between Islam and other religions, cultures, societies and/or civilizations, CIS wishes to encourage creative approaches to comparative studies.

11. Metissage, the Contrapuntal and Heterotopia

The last  in a series of eight public events on Pluralism and Plurality in Islamic Cultures, co-produced by Aga Khan University Institute for the Study of Muslim Civilisations, the Aga Khan Museum and the Aga Khan Trust for Culture Education Programme.  The event will be held online.

In this presentation, Shezad Dawood will commence by sharing a specially produced film that explores his engagement with how different cultures and systems of meaning intersect and inform each other, generating both consonance and dissonance. Beginning with his celebrated ‘tumbleweed’ works, he will go on to discuss the importance of light, music, textiles and film as mediums through which cultural hybridity can be explored.   The film will be followed by a live Question and Answer session with the artist.
