Problems and Aims
The topic of this conference is the production of scented materials (“perfumes”) in the ancient world from multiple perspectives: historical, archaeological, natural scientific, artisanal, cultural, religious. We intend the temporal scope of “ancient” to be fuzzy. The central question of the conference is this: how do we, and how should we, describe and trace the ways perfumes were made within and across cultures of the ancient world?
Specific guiding questions include:
Do familiar linguistic, ethnic, and religious categories used to delineate traditions of ancient perfume production and use—“Egyptian,” “Greek,” “Arabic,” “Buddhist,” “Christian,” “Chinese,” etc.— accurately distinguish such traditions and cultures? To what extent can we speak of, for example, “Roman” perfumery, or are there rather many “Roman” traditions across different times, regions, and intentions?
Are there correlations between the manufacture of scented materials and other goods? How were those correlations categorized and understood, e.g., luxury goods, medical, magical, divine, etc.?
Were natural scents compared with, even opposed to, artificial or synthetic ones?
Can we demarcate traditions of ancient perfumery by means of trade networks, equipment, manufacturing techniques? Did know-how and theories of perfume production travel along trade networks?
Did the introduction of new botanical, animal and mineral goods, like musk, camphor, ambergris, etc., coincide with different production techniques?
What do approaches like practical exegesis or experimental archaeology and digital humanities contribute to these questions in a way that might complement traditional ones found in archaeology, archaeometry, philology, classics, history and philosophy?
For this call, we are especially interested in work on scented materials and manufacturing in traditions beyond Europe and the Mediterranean shores. We also believe such a project would benefit immensely by engaging practitioners of perfumery, scent and the senses. For this reason, we are opening the call to scholars, perfumers, artists, and practitioners alike.
Format
The conference will be in-person. Sessions will be 30 minutes: 20 minutes presentation and 10 minutes for discussion. Speakers are expected to be present, as the conference will involve practical exegesis and demonstrations. Hybrid will only be possible in exceptional circumstance. Talks will be broadcast online.
A conference fee of 1.000 CZK (~40 EUR) will be used to cover materials, lunches, and a conference dinner. Unfortunately, we are unable to cover travel and accommodation costs for all participants, but we are happy to help find possible funding sources, especially for graduate students and early career researchers.
Output
The output of this conference will be an edited volume with provisionally titled, Perfume Production in the Ancient World. The 2023 conference is being organized as the first stage of this process. Participants will present an initial draft / talk of their work. Selected participants will then revise their papers to approximately 7–10.000 words (max), and we will come together again (in person or in a hybrid session) in late 2024 or early 2025 to present final drafts. These will be assembled and reviewed by the editors and submitted for publication in late 2025.

5. CFP – Symposium of Shahnama in the International Culture and Art, Istanbul – Deadline: August 31, 2023
Shahnama, which has numerous copies in various collections, either illustrated or non-illustrated, is considered one of the greatest works of world classics. Written by the poet Ferdowsi to be presented to Sultan Mahmud of Ghazna, Shahnama is an epic that blends the mythical and real history of Iran from the creation of the first human being to the domination of the Arabs.
Speculations about this work, which also attracts attention in the West, have been examined by researchers working in different disciplines and have been the subject of many studies, each of which has brought new evaluations. Thus, the idea of organizing a symposium and exhibition to discuss the phenomenon of Shahnama in the history of culture and art has emerged. The first event, titled “Symposium and Exhibition of Shahnama in the International Culture and Art,” will be held in Istanbul in collaboration with Istanbul University, Isfahan University, and Fatih Sultan Mehmet Foundation University from October 17th to 19th, 2023.
Researchers from various fields can participate in the symposium with papers aiming to examine Shahnama under headings such as Literature, History, Art History, Cultural History, and Art, to discuss it critically and to evaluate it from different perspectives.
The symposium aims to provide a free discussion environment for new research and monographic studies on Shahnama. In addition, the symposium is open to oral history studies, intangible cultural heritage elements, and projects that utilize technology (such as artificial intelligence, 3D works, virtual reality, augmented reality, etc.).
Details about the symposium are as follows:
• The language of the symposium is Turkish, English, and Persian. Simultaneous translation will be provided in all three languages.
• The duration of presentations is 20 minutes.
• Abstracts can be directly uploaded to https://shahnamehsymposium.fsm.edu.tr/Sempozyum-Basvuru
• Abstracts should be between 250-500 words. The abstract should include the title, the aim and scope of the topic, references to the main sources, the research problem, and 3-6 keywords.
• The deadline for abstract submission is August 31st, 2023.
• Accepted papers will be announced on the symposium website on September 11th, 2023, and participants will be notified by email.
• The registration fee for the symposium is 100 TL for Turkish citizens (students), 250 TL for academics and researchers; and €25 for foreign participants (students), €125 for academics and researchers. The registration fee includes symposium materials, refreshments, and lunch. If the abstract is accepted, the registration fee should be transferred to the following account:

10. Epidemics and their determinants: Past and present
Call for papers
Barcelona, February 8 – 9, 2024
COVID-19 has shown that epidemics are not solely relics of the past, nor are they exclusive to low-income countries. Consequently, there has been a surge of academic interest in studying contemporary and historical epidemics. Despite efforts to reference and employ historical epidemic management measures such as cordons sanitaires or quarantines, historical epidemics have rarely been used as a testing ground to advance our understanding of present and future outbreaks or as a foundation for future preparedness.
This workshop aims to create a platform for interdisciplinary debate bridging the gap between past and present epidemics. It aims to bring together historians, demographers, epidemiologists, geographers, and related disciplines that deal with the study of infectious diseases. The workshop will focus on epidemics and their dynamics, both past and present. Possible topics to be addressed are:
– Socioeconomic and environmental determinants in the spread of epidemics.
– Role of non-pharmaceutical interventions on health and economic outcomes.
– Long term consequences for socioeconomic status, health and well-being.
– Marginalized groups as risk factors.
– New and old theoretical approaches to epidemics.
– Methodological contributions will be welcomed.
Please submit your abstract (300 – 500 words) to jpujadasmo@uoc.edu by December 1, 2023. Accepted proposals will be notified by December 15, 2023.

4. Medica: the Society for the Study of Healing in the Middle Agesis soliciting paper proposals for the 2024 Leeds International Medieval Congress on July 1-4 which has the special thematic strand of “crisis.”
Exploring Medieval Health Crises: Authority, Practice, & Knowledge:
From epidemics and famine to barber surgeons and midwives, healing during the Middle Ages represented the ultimate response to social and personal crises. While the medieval medical experience was often a tale of hardship and loss, historians of medicine continue to demonstrate that healing knowledge and practice in this period also revealed remarkable resilience, practicality, and innovation. In these sessions, Medica hopes to explore how society and individuals coped with health crises and the healing interventions that resulted from these events. We, therefore, invite papers that explore the many varied types of crises found within the scope of medieval health and healing. Topics to be addressed include but are not limited to:

15. CFP: NEW DIRECTIONS IN THE HISTORY OF EARLY ISLAMIC ART AND ARCHITECTURE:
Panel at College Art Association Annual Conference in Chicago Feb. 14-17, 2024.
Deadline for submission: August 31, 2023 (Please use link below to submit a proposal)
Panel Abstract:
With the passing of fifty years since the initial publication of Oleg Grabar’s The Formation of Islamic Art, this panel invites/presents papers that reflect on the recent developments in the history of early Islamic art and architecture from the time of the Prophet through the “Age of the Caliphates” (ca. 650–1050 CE). Significant archaeological discoveries, a broader geographical range, and the introduction of new methodological and theoretical approaches have expanded, challenged, or otherwise engaged Grabar’s pioneering synthesis of debates about the first four centuries of Islamic art and architecture. This is a field that was and, in many ways, still is defined by a series of binaries including courtly/religious, continuity/change, public/private, and aniconic/figural. We invite papers that seek to reconsider or deconstruct these dichotomies. Topics may include processes of adaptation from various visual practices of Late Antiquity; new chronological frameworks based on material/socio-technical regimes; new areas of inquiry, including the performative object, space, or gaze; alternative ways of thinking through materiality, spectacle, audience, and authorship; as well as the complicated legacies of colonialism within the field. This panel offers a chance to evaluate how the study of early Islamic visual and material culture have changed since The Formation of Islamic Art and map out new futures for the field.

The Great Lakes Adiban Society (GLAS) invites submissions for its seventh annual workshop, scheduled to take place in Kalamazoo, Michigan, on October 7-8, 2023. We welcome works in progress that would benefit from extensive discussion and feedback, and especially encourage graduate students to participate.
The Society aims to provide a regional forum for scholars of Islamicate adab, particularly of the medieval and early modern periods, to meet and share their work. We leave our parameters of language and genre intentionally open in order to invite as wide a collaboration as can be useful, but as a group we are generally interested in the literary production of the broad complex of premodern Muslim societies across the Eastern Hemisphere. This naturally includes the major Islamicate languages of Arabic, Persian, Turkish, and Urdu, as well as many others (Armenian, Kurdish, Georgian, Hebrew, Spanish, etc.) that participate in similar literary conventions.
Those who wish to participate can apply by filling out our online application by August 30, 2023. Please note that each accepted participant will be given 45 minutes to present and discuss their work; because of this, we have limited space and may have to turn down some submissions if we receive too many. In such an event, preference will generally be given to graduate students, junior scholars based in the Great Lakes region, and works in progress. All participants should plan to cover their own costs.
All applicants can expect to hear back from us by early September.

Topic: Sacred Signs: How Jewish, Christian, and Muslim Visual Symbols Draw from the Same Well
Abstract: This image-rich talk will introduce some of the many examples of how symbols in the visual art of the Abrahamic traditions draw from a pagan vocabulary that precedes all of them as well as from each other; how they converge and diverge across history and geography; and how they continue to appear in the modern and contemporary art of a world that often defines itself to be secular.

10. Cartography in the European Enlightenment — NOW ONLINE FOR FREE ACCESS
The History of Cartography Project at the University of Wisconsin–Madison and the University of Chicago Press are pleased to announce the online publication of Cartography in the European Enlightenment, edited by Matthew H. Edney and Mary S. Pedley, volume 4 of The History of Cartography (Chicago, 2019). The Press has added the volume — all 1,764 pages with 1,000,000 words and 984 full-color illustrations, in 479 entries written by 214 experts — to the other volumes of the series already online for free public access (1–3 and 6).
Goto https://press.uchicago.edu/books/HOC/index.html to access all the volumes; the links to each volume, with volume 4 newly added, are at left.
Cartography in the European Enlightenment explores all aspects of mapping in the long eighteenth century, approximately between 1650 and 1800, give or take a decade as necessary, in Europe, Europe’s overseas empires and trading companies, in Russia, and in the Ottoman Empire. It is arranged by major mapping practices (geographical mapping, property mapping, marine charting, etc.) and by major communities of map consumers (military, civil government, the emergent public). It is the starting point for anyone seeking to learn more about mapping at a time when maps served as a foundational metaphor for the organization of knowledge.
Enjoy! And please share this FREE resource across other intellectual and social media!

12. With Brush and Qalam; Museum of Islamic Art, Berlin – July 2023 to October 2023
With Brush and Qalam
Chinese Arabic Calligraphy by Haji Noor Deen
06.07.2023 to 22.10.2023
Pergamonmuseum
With the solo exhibition of the most important contemporary representative of Sini calligraphy, the Museum für Islamische Kunst (Museum for Islamic Art) is showing selected works by Haji Noor Deen in Berlin for the first time.
Sini calligraphy is the artistic script used by the Muslim minority in China. Its history reaches back to the 14th century. The distinctive feature of Sini calligraphy is the melding of techniques and styles from the Arabic and Chinese lettering traditions.
Arabic calligraphy follows a centuries-old tradition involving strict rules with precisely defined proportions for the letters. Sini calligraphy, on the other hand, is completely free of rules. The top priority is the perceived beauty and balance of the composition. Even the direction of the writing can be freely chosen, either from top to bottom, as in Chinese, or from right to left, as in Arabic.
Haji Noor Deen is a master of Sini calligraphy. Inspired by calligraphic traditions from China to Istanbul, the artist creates works with expressive lines that at first glance appear Chinese, but on closer inspection go far beyond that.
The artist’s painting tools reflect this diversity. Haji Noor Deen paints the Arabic letters with a brush that is characteristically used for Chinese calligraphy. He equally appreciates the qalam, the reed pen of Arabic calligraphy. He also uses completely new tools, such as cloth-covered wooden spatulas that he produces himself. With masterly skill, he creates artworks of great aesthetic power that surprise and affect the viewer.

13. CFP – The Materiality of Pious Texts: The Qur’an and Devotional Manuscripts, CIHA, Lyon, France – June 23 – 28, 2024
We invite paper proposals for the session “The Materiality of Pious Texts: The Qur’an and Devotional Manuscripts” at the 36th Congress of the Comité international d’histoire de l’art (CIHA), June 23 – 28, 2024, in Lyon, France.
Both the Qur’an and Islamic devotional manuscripts have traditionally been studied as texts and artistic achievements, but rarely as material objects. Concerns about how to handle and dispose of Qur’anic matter – how to use the manuscript, where to place it, when to touch it – or whether it is permissible to perfume it, ingest it or sell it, were among the anxieties of the first centuries of Islam. Formative to the Qur’an’s physical manifestation as codices, scrolls or inscribed artefacts, these debates shaped its sacrality in the material realm and affected the use of Islamic devotional manuscripts in which passages of the Qur’an appear next to other pious texts, prayers or illustrations of holy places. Art history has been rarely concerned with such phenomena, or with the corporeality of sacred and pious texts in general.
This session aims to interrogate the materiality of pious texts and the roles they played in shaping artistic forms embedded in a diverse range of practices, at the time of their production or in their afterlives: Qur’anic calligraphy, calligrams, and emblematic inscriptions in books and scrolls, but also on tablets and panels of various materials, interspersed or combined with devotional texts and images presented in diagrammatic or iconified forms. By moving away from archaeological taxonomies and the study of styles and repertoires, we hope to create space for approaching pious texts through their materiality, their use, and the range of physical reactions they elicited. Meanings – whether religious, political, or aesthetic – can be found not just in how texts looked, but also in how they functioned, and it is through the lens of materiality that previously neglected ideas and behaviors can be examined.
With that in mind, we call for papers that explore the materiality of pious texts of any kind, focusing on how they were shaped, what aesthetic ideas were embedded in them, and what kind of engagement their forms triggered, be it at the time of their making, consumption, alteration, or reuse. As their meanings shifted throughout their spatial and temporal circulation, within and beyond Muslim communities, these texts projected multifaceted statements of faith and efficacy that are yet to be unpacked. Later interventions such as manipulations of their constitutive elements, amendments to their illustrations, or smudging and erasures, also reflect practices and beliefs, often echoing ideologies. In no way limited to these aspects, this session seeks papers that re-instate the role of makers, beholders and users of texts within art history. As such, it encourages cross-disciplinary research – bridging religious studies, anthropology and visual culture – to re-establish the relation between art history, material culture and religion.
