12. Call for Papers – International Conference
From Malacca to Manchester: Curating Islamic Collections Worldwide
23-24th February, 2017
Proposal deadline: Sunday, 25th September 2016
Proposals for papers are welcome for the two day conference From Malacca to Manchester: Curating Islamic Collections Worldwide, to be held at Manchester Museum on the 23rd and 24th February, 2017. The conference is part of a wider project to catalogue and research collections of Islamic art and material culture across the Manchester Museums and Galleries Partnership (MMGP), and is supported by the John Ellerman Foundation.
In the UK there is a need to better understand the rich and complex traditions of the Islamic world. A 2010 YouGov survey commissioned by the Exploring Islam Foundation revealed that the British public know relatively little about Islam and tend to problematise it as a consequence of exposure to negative media stereotypes. In an attempt to counteract this, UK museums and galleries are using collections of Islamic art and material culture to increase understanding and challenge misconceptions. In Manchester specifically, work on the Islamic collections will inform an exciting series of events and exhibitions in 2017 to mark UK-India Year of Culture, and a permanent South Asia gallery due to open at Manchester Museum in 2020.
Concurrently, across the UK and Europe high-profile museums such as the Louvre, the British Museum, and the Museum of Islamic Art, Berlin, have embarked upon or completed major re-installations of important Islamic art collections. At the same time, smaller and regional museums are developing new ways to work with existing collections. The role of the curator is changing, and previously underrepresented voices are increasingly given space to express personal responses to material cultures. All such projects represent critical opportunities to present the complexity of Islamic art in innovative new ways, reach out to new audiences and utilise the richness of Islamic material culture to promote social cohesion and understanding.
This conference will explore and appraise current and developing practices in the curating of museum collections of Islamic art and material culture across the world, in Europe and in the UK. A keynote address by Dr Stefan Weber, Director of the Museum of Islamic Art in Berlin, will be complemented by a series of presentations, panel discussions, practical workshops, and visits to collections in Manchester including the Whitworth Art Gallery, Manchester Museum, The John Rylands Library (Special Collections), and Manchester Art Gallery. The conference’s aim is to offer a vibrant and challenging perspective on the field, review ongoing projects and public and scholarly engagement, and explore professionals’ aspirations for the future developments of collections of Islamic art and materials culture.
Original proposals are welcome from British, European, and international museum professionals, rising and established academic scholars, and graduate students. Submissions are invited on topics including, but not limited to:
Guidelines for paper proposals:
Papers will be 20 minutes in length with an additional 10 minutes for questions. Proposals for presentations or panels of up to four participants should be emailed to Jenny Norton-Wright and Stephen Terence Welsh by 25th September 2016, using the following email address: malaccatomanchester@gmail.com.
Proposals should include the presenter’s name, position and institutional affiliation, the paper’s title, an abstract of up to 250 words, a biography of up to 200 words (written in the third person), and a contact email address. Panel proposals should include the above for each speaker, plus a paragraph of up to 250 words describing the panel’s rationale. Informal enquiries in advance of this deadline are welcome.

6. Translation and Religion: Interrogating Concepts, Methods and Practices
University of Edinburgh, 1-3 September 2016
What is the relationship between ‘translation’ and ‘religion’? While all ‘religions’ travel and engage in translation of one kind or another, what gets translated? How do the different components of what is currently understood as ‘religion’—texts, practices, experiences, inner faith or belief systems—translate differently? How can we analyze such commonly held beliefs that some languages simply are sacred and should not be translated? And what are the implications of such questions for understanding religious conversion? What can translation concepts and methods tell us about the way religions and the study of religions are constructed?
While both disciplines have evolved and grown rapidly over the past half century, each has also engaged, in the past few decades, in a re-evaluation of its basic ideas and terms, including fundamental categories such as ‘religion’ and ‘translation.’ It can no longer be taken for granted that there is one definition for what comprises the ‘sacred’ or indeed a ‘correct’ or ‘good’ translation. Such re-assessment provides an excellent context within which to creatively engage the two to generate forward-looking theoretical perspectives.
This three-day AHRC-funded conference aims to bring together scholars from the two disciplines to investigate theories, concepts and methods with comparative and critical tools in order to evaluate areas of mutually creative overlap.

7. Call For Papers: Rethinking Late Ottoman Civilization
March 24-25, 2017
University of Texas at Austin
Department of Middle Eastern Studies
Keynote Speaker: Suraiya Faroqhi
Program Committee: Samy Ayoub, Jeannette Okur, and Firdevs Canbaz Yumuşak
The Ottomans encountered the word civilization in the early 19th century, and the Ottoman version of this word, medeniyet, was coined thereafter. Both ‘civilization’ and ‘empire’ refer to comprehensive manifestations of power, culture, and ideas. This symposium will explore the artifacts of Ottoman modernization and intellectual history, and encourage careful examination of the late Ottoman discourse on “civilization”. As is well known, many Ottoman intellectuals, in their conceptualization of civilization, aimed to reconcile the material achievements of European civilization with Ottoman-Islamic morality and aesthetics. Even so, historiographies in the post-Ottoman sovereign states have often equated modernization with de-Ottomanization, a notion which excludes the Ottoman period as a legitimate setting for the study of modernity. This symposium encourages new scholarship that will further legitimize the study of Ottomans’ engagement with modernity’s social, political, economic and aesthetic implications.
We invite advanced graduate students and established scholars to submit paper proposals for this two-day interdisciplinary symposium to be held at the University of Texas at Austin on 24-25 March, 2017. We will welcome papers from the disciplines of history, law, literature, architecture, art, and music. We especially encourage papers on the following subtopics:
Possible subtopics include (but are not limited to):
– Daily Life in the Empire
– Justice
– Aesthetics of Love (Aşk)
– Family
– Politics
– Minority Communities
– Trade and the Economy
Potential participants should submit an abstract (up to 250 words) and a brief curriculum vita by October 31, 2016. Please include the words “Late Ottoman Civilization Symposium” in the subject line. Also, please provide your institutional affiliation, as well as a mailing address and telephone number where you may be reached. Funding for lodging and meals may be available for participants.
Applicants will be notified of acceptance by November 14, 2016 and completed papers from accepted applicants will be due for pre-circulation on March 1, 2017. Please send all submission materials to sayoub@austin.utexas.edu

8. CFP – Light and Darkness in Medieval Art, 1200–1450 (ICMS, Kalamazoo, May 2017)
International Congress on Medieval Studies, Kalamazoo, 11-14 May 2017
Sponsored by the International Centre of Medieval Art.
Convenors: Stefania Gerevini and Tom Nickson
Light has occupied an increasingly prominent role in medieval studies in recent years. Its perceptual and epistemic significance in the period 1200-1450 has been scrutinized in several specialised research projects, and the changing ways in which light and light-effects are rendered and produced in the arts of the Middle Ages, particularly in Byzantium and Islam, are routinely evoked in literature. However, scholarship on these topics remains fragmented, especially for the Gothic period, and comparative approaches are seldom attempted. New technologies of virtual reconstruction and changing fashions of museum display make it an opportune moment to consider these issues in a more systematic manner.
These two sessions will investigate how perceptions of light and darkness informed the ways in which art across Europe and the Mediterranean was produced, viewed and understood in the period 1200–1450. In the late 12th century a key set of optical writings was translated from Arabic into Latin, providing new theoretical paradigms for addressing questions of physical sight and illumination across Europe. At this time theologies of light also gained renewed popularity in the eastern Mediterranean – particularly as a result of the Hesychast controversy in Byzantium, and in connection with Sufi notions of divine illumination in Islam. What correlations can be traced between theories of optics, theologies of light, practices of illumination, and modes of viewing in the Middle Ages? Are there similarities in the ways different religious or cultural communities conceptualised light and used it in everyday life or ritual settings?
These sessions invite specialists of Christian, Islamic and Jewish art and culture to explore the status of light in broader discourses around visuality, visibility and materiality; the interconnections between conceptualizations of light and coeval attitudes towards objectivity and naturalism; and the ways in which light can articulate political, social or divine authority and hierarchies. The session will also welcome papers that address such broad methodological questions as: can the investigation of light in art prompt reconsideration of well established periodizations and interpretative paradigms of art history? How was the dramatic interplay between light and obscurity exploited in the secular and religious architecture of Europe and the medieval Mediterranean in order to organise space, direct viewers and convey meaning? How carefully were light effects taken into account in the display of images and portable objects, and how does consideration of luminosity, shadow and darkness hone our understanding of the agency of medieval objects? Finally, to what extent is light’s ephemeral and fleeting nature disguised by changing fashions of display and technologies of reproduction, and – crucially – how do these affect our ability to apprehend and explain medieval approaches to light?
Proposals for 20 min papers should include an abstract (max.250 words) and brief CV. Proposals should be submitted by 10 September 2015 to the session organizers: Stefania Gerevini (stefania.gerevini@unibocconi.it) and Tom Nickson (tom.nickson@courtauld.ac.uk). Thanks to a generous grant from the Kress Foundation, funds may be available to defray travel costs of speakers in ICMA-sponsored sessions up to a maximum of $600 ($1200 for transatlantic travel). If available, the Kress funds are allocated for travel and hotel only. Speakers in ICMA sponsored sessions will be refunded only after the conference, against travel receipts.

1. International Tashkubrīzādah Symposium, which will be organized in November 18-20, 2016 by Scientific Studies Association (ILEM), Istanbul Medeniyet Univeristy and the Foundation for Science, the Arts, History and Literature (ISTEV), aims to introduce a sixteenth century scholar, Abū al-Khayr ʿIsām al-dīn Aḥmad Tashkubrīzādah, one of the most important figures in Ottoman intellectual tradition, to local and international scientific milieus, as well as to discuss his contribution to Islamic philosophy-science tradition.
Although Tashkubrīzādah is the author of nearly two hundred works from a variety of topics including philosophy, politics, kalām, mathematics, astronomy, fiqh, linguistics, Sufism, tafsīr, the classification of sciences, and history, with a few exceptions, they are yet to be edited, thereby unknown in the scholarly milieu. For almost three years, some of Tashkubrīzādah’s ouevre have been edited and translated into Turkish by more than twenty scholars. This symposium, which will be a fruit of this three-year-preparation, aims to unfold Tashkubrīzādah’s world of thought on the basis of his works prepared for publication, as well as to shed light on Ottoman world of thought in the sixteenth century with reference to him. The publication of Tashkubrīzādah’s almost thirthy works before the symposium, as well as with the outcomes of the symposium will make a substantial contribution to studies on Islamic philosophy after Ibn Sīnā, and on Ottoman thought.
The organizing commitee invites scholars to participate in the symposium with their papers, thereby to contribute to studies on Tashkubrīzādah.

1.Regionality: Looking for the Local in the Arts of Islam
HISTORIANS OF ISLAMIC ART ASSOCIATION Fifth Biennial Symposium: 20 – 22 October, 2016
All panels and keynote talks will take place at the Kenneth Clark Lecture Theatre (KCLT) at the Courtauld Institute of Art.
The Fifth Biennial Conference of the Historians of Islamic Art Association celebrates the European ‘roots’ of the study of the arts that fall under the cultural umbrella of Islam, and the formation of the important early collections and exhibitions that launched its scholarship. Those early, mostly connoisseurial categories of regional types and styles – the “Moresque”, Persian painting, Turkish tiles, Indian decorative arts – formed the foundations from which universalizing narratives of “Islamic” arts emerged, especially in the period after the Second World War. Some fifty years later, we are witnessing a resurgence of the study of regional specificities, augmented with deeper research into the diverse facets of any given locality or artistic form, and a greater commitment to the linguistic and cultural particularities that shaped the arts, architecture and archaeology in a specific locale. Rigorous application of trans-disciplinary research strategies have contributed to the deepening of our understanding of the arts of Islam in local terms, and have allowed us to embrace broader historical trajectories to include the modern and contemporary in our field.
The conference is organised by Sussan Babaie and the Historians of Islamic Art Association.
The conference program consists of 6 panels, an object-handling session. In addition, there are four keynote speakers:

IRAN IN WORLD POLITICS

ABOUT THE SERIES
Iran in World Politics is committed to showcasing cutting-edge research
on the place of Iran in the world. The changing regional and

opportunities for Iran. These relate to diplomacy and trade, strategic
alliance-building, and networks of cultural and religion. How Iran
responds to these challenges and opportunities, and how other states
reciprocate, is influenced by a range of factors, including threat
perceptions. Domestic politics have a direct bearing on Iran’s external
relations and this publication series is keenly aware of this nexus.
Iran in World Politics promotes original and pioneering research on
urgent issues in Iran’s international relations.

Zurich and Schaffhausen, May 4 – 06, 2017
Deadline: Sep 25, 2016
A l’Orientale – Collecting, Displaying and Appropriating Islamic Art
and Architecture in the 19th and early 20th centuries
International conference
Organizers: Prof. Dr. Francine Giese (University of Zurich),
Prof. Dr. Mercedes Volait (CNRS/InVisu),
Dr. Ariane Varela Braga (University of Zurich)
Cooperations: Museum Rietberg Zürich, Moser Familienmuseum
Charlottenfels der Heinrich und Henri Moser Stiftung in Neuhausen bei
Schaffhausen
Keynotes Speakers:
Kjeld v. Folsach (David’s Collection Kopenhagen),
Yannick Lintz (Musée du Louvre), Tim Stanley (V&A London),
Stefan Weber (Museum für Islamische Kunst Berlin)
The Swiss Orient traveler Henri Moser Charlottenfels (1844-1923) is
considered one of the pioneering 19th-century amateurs of Islamic Art,
because of his activity as collector and exhibitor. His continuously
growing collection had made Moser famous from 1876 onwards through
much-noticed traveling exhibitions in and outside of Switzerland. His
collection was later displayed permanently at the widely known private
museum he established in 1906 at the Charlottenfels Castle near
Schaffhausen. Through his 1914 donation to the Bern Historical Museum,
Moser assured that after his disappearance the Orientalische Sammlung
Henri Moser Charlottenfels (Oriental collection Henri Moser
Charlottenfels) of over 4000 objects would remain available to the
public in an exhibition hall specially built for that purpose.
The conference wants to present Henri Moser and his collection in an
international context. Does Moser’s activity of collecting and
exhibiting Islamic art reflect a widespread tendency of his period? How
have strategies of presentation, re-contextualisation and didactics
changed since the 19th century? To what extent have private collections
influenced the making of Islamic departments in national museums? And
which role did private collectors such as Moser play in transmitting
and appropriating Islamic art and architecture in the West during the
19th and early 20th century?
The conference will open on Thursday, 4th May 2017, with a first
section on „Displaying Islamic Art“ at the Museum Rietberg, with a
roundtable discussion with representatives of the most important
European collections of Islamic Art. The second day will take place at
the University of Zurich and will be dedicated to the section
„Appropriating Islamic Art and Architecture“. Finally, a third section
regarding „Collecting Islamic Art“, taking place on Saturday, 6th May
2017, will bring the topic to a close in Charlottenfels Castle.
We invite you to propose papers on the following topics:
– Moser and his collection
– Islamic art in European private collections in the 19th and early 20th centuries
– Mapping and classifying Islamic art through collections
– From Wunderkammer to modern exhibition – ways of presenting Islamic art
– Transmission of Islamic aesthetics through art exhibitions
– Strategies of appropriation in the West
– Neo-Islamic declinations of Islamic art and architecture
Each presentation will be of 20 minutes, and may be given in French,
English or German. Please submit a proposal of maximum 300 words and a
brief curriculum vitae by the 25th of September 2016 to the following
e-mail address: conference@transculturalstudies.ch
