The Crown Center for Middle East Studies is offering one-year
fellowships to outstanding scholars of Middle East politics, economics,
history, religion, or social developments for the 2017-2018 academic
year. This fellowship can be either a post-doctoral position for new
PhDs or a research fellowship for assistant professors during a year off
from teaching. It would allow junior scholars the flexibility and means
to advance a specific research project related to the contemporary
Middle East.
About the Crown Center
The Crown Center’s research interests encompass the twenty-two members
of the Arab League, stretching from Morocco to Iraq, as well as Israel,
Turkey, and Iran. The Center’s research focus extends well beyond
Arab-Israeli tensions to include Middle East politics and history,
Islamic studies, economic and social developments, and regional security
and arms control.
The Center’s research staff reflects its broad geopolitical focus.
During its ten years of operation, experienced researchers with
high-level expertise about Egypt, Israel, Palestine, Turkey, Iraq, Iran,
GCC and Saudi Arabia have conducted research for the Center. In addition
to hosting conferences, seminars, and workshops, the Center has created
tools for “real-time” distribution of analyses regarding current
developments and events in the Middle East with its “Middle East Brief.”
The Center also publishes a Working Paper series to promote young
scholars’ opportunities to publish in peer-reviewed journals.
Additionally, the Center’s faculty teaches undergraduate- and
graduate-level courses at Brandeis University.
Eligibility
The 2017-2018 Junior Research Fellowship is open to both recent PhDs (as
a post-doctoral position) and assistant professors in Middle East
related fields. PhD must be completed by September 1, 2017.
Terms
This fellowship is a one-year appointment beginning September 1, 2017
and ending June 30, 2018. The stipend for these 10 months will be
$48,000. In addition, $3,000 in funding is available for research,
travel, and related expenses. Fringe benefits will be available during
the appointment period.
Fellows are expected to be in residence at the Crown Center during the
tenure of the fellowship. During their residence, fellows are required
to write a Middle East Brief and participate in all Crown Center
seminars, conferences and other events, and may produce a Working Paper
related to his/her research project.

4. The Druze Heritage Foundation
Announcement of Research Awards
The Druze Heritage Foundation is pleased to announce a Research Award Program offering a number of graduate research awards to doctoral students in selected universities who are writing or planning to write their dissertations on topics relating to the history, culture and society of the Druze or other religious communities of Fatimid provenance. The awards are meant to encourage research in these areas by providing financial support (up to $10,000) to students as they seek to fund their research needs or travel. Awards will be allocated by the Foundation’s Academic Advisory Committee upon the recommendation of the applicant’s dissertation adviser.

The Foundation expects to receive a copy of the dissertation subsequent to the granting of degree. The Foundation may later consider publishing the dissertation if this is mutually agreed by it and the author.
The Druze Heritage Foundation is a trusteeship registered in the United Kingdom whose principal function is to promote the scholarly study of the Druze, their history, society and culture and related topics. The Foundation has thus far published over 25 titles in the last several years, in both English and Arabic. (The books may be consulted in our website www.druzeheritage.org). The Foundation has also organized and funded two scholarly conferences in Oxford, U.K., in collaboration with the Middle East Centre, Saint Anthony’s College, Oxford University.

5. The Council on Library and Information Resources (CLIR) is currently accepting applications for the 2017-2018 Mellon Fellowships for Dissertation Research in Original Sources. The deadline for submission of application materials is 5:00 pm Eastern time, Friday, December 2, 2016.
The purposes of this fellowship program are to:
The program will be offering about fifteen competitively awarded fellowships in 2017. Each provides a stipend of $2,000 per month for 9–12 months. Each fellow will receive an additional $1,000 upon participating in a symposium on research in original sources and submitting an acceptable report to CLIR on the research experience. Thus the maximum award will be $25,000.
Fellowship stipends will support research beginning between June 1 and September 1, 2017, and ending within 12 months of commencing. Fellowships will not be renewed or extended. Fellows are expected to devote full time to their dissertation research without holding teaching or research assistantships or undertaking other paid work. Fellows may use stipends to meet living expenses, travel costs, and other expenses that enable dissertation research to be carried out, but not to defray tuition.

Postdoctoral Fellowships: Law and Learning in Imami Shi’ite Islam (LAWALISI)
The LAWALISI project (an ERC Advanced award) is looking to recruit two postdoctoral researchers with a focus in pre-modern Imami Shi’i law, particularly the formative and classical periods. These two-year fellowships will commence in March 2017; one will focus on the elaboration of legal theory in Imami law from the earliest time onward, and the other will examine the developing tradition of fiqh and fatwas in premodern Imami jurisprudence. The closing date is 8th November 2016. The LAWALISI project is planning to advertise two additional fellowships on developments in modern Imami Shi’i law in 2018.

1. Faculty position: Modern Arabic Literature and Literary Theory
The Department of Arabic and Near Eastern Languages at the American University of Beirut seeks applicants for a faculty position in the field of modern Arabic literature and literary theory to begin August 15, 2017.
The position is at the assistant professor level. The Appointment is for an initial period of four years with opportunities for renewal and advancement. The usual teaching load is not more than 5 course a year. The language of instruction in this department (and only in this department) is Standard Arabic (fuṣḥā), but mastery of English is an essential requirement.
Applicants should be well versed in both Arab and Western classical heritages, including Western literary theory. A reading knowledge of French and/or German is highly desirable.
Applicants must have completed their PhD by August 2017. They must be able to teach, in Arabic, service courses in Arabic grammar and modern Arabic thought to native speakers of Arabic. Solid knowledge of the Arabic language and heritage and training in modern Western methodologies are essential.
