2. Call for Proposals
Persianate Literatures as World Literature
We are putting together a volume on Persianate Literatures as World Literature. The volume is intended for publication in the “Literatures as World Literature” series of Academic Bloomsbury Publishing (Series Editor: Thomas Oliver Beebee), estimated to be published in 2019.
The book will explore the connections between Persianate literary productions and those of the rest of the world; advance comparative studies of Persianate literatures; and/or reread Persianate literatures with respect to globalization, transnationalism, and world citizenry—all with the overarching aim of foregrounding the interdependencies, interrelations, connections, and flows that expand Persian literatures beyond their mere locality and showcase their possible connecting and influencing of other local and
translocal narratives. As such, the primary focus of Persianate Literatures as World Literature will be on rereading Persian literary texts and authors in their “worldly” dimensions, situating such readings within—and ideally contributing to—ongoing critical debates on “world literature.” With this all-embracing aim in mind, we would be happy to consider submissions focused on topics including, yet not limited to, the following:
If you are interested in contributing a chapter to this project, please send your CV and a proposal of between 300 and 500 words, including a concise Working Bibliography, by June 20, 2018 to mostafa.abedinifard@utoronto.ca, a.vafa@sheffield.ac.uk, and omid.azadi@shirazu.ac.ir We will notify authors of acceptance by July 5, 2018, and the authors will then have until 31 January 2

5. Location: Faculty of Classics, University of Oxford, Oxford.
Salary: £31,604 p.a. (Grade 7.1)
Hours: Full Time
Contract Type: Fixed-Term until 30th September 2020
Closes: 31st May 2018
Following the award of a European Research Council Advanced Grant, ‘Monumental Art of the Christian and Early Islamic East: Cultural Identities and Classical Heritage’, to Dr Judith McKenzie, the Faculty of Classics is seeking to appoint a Postdoctoral Research Associate in Early Islamic Monumental Art and Architecture to work on the project. This post will be fixed-term for 24 months until 30 September 2020, and it is anticipated that the appointee will start on 1 October 2018.
This project will analyse the monumental art (large decorative programmes of wall and floor mosaics, and wall paintings on buildings) of two areas of the former eastern Roman Empire which came under Islamic rule but which have never been the subject of an integrated comprehensive study: Egypt and Syro-Palestine (modern Syria, Jordan, Lebanon, and Israel/Palestine). It aims to determine systematically how the strength and nature of the local
Greco-Roman traditions and expressions of identities influenced monumental art in these regions during Late Antiquity (AD 250–750), the period of transition from paganism to Christianity and, in turn, to Islam. The project aims to define and distinguish between different strands of classical influence, both local and external (from the centres of Rome, Constantinople, and Alexandria). For the early Islamic period, it will also include other, eastern, influences. By investigating the roles of local artists and artisans as creators rather than imitators, and continuities of local workshop traditions, this project will transform our understanding of the artistic culture of the late antique Middle East.
Reporting to Dr Judith McKenzie, the post holder will carry out research on early Islamic wall mosaics and paintings for the European Research Council (ERC) Advanced Grant project, ‘Monumental Art of the Christian and Early Islamic East: Cultural Identities and Classical Heritage’.
Further Particulars (which all applicants must consult) are available throughhttps://www.recruit.ox.ac.uk/pls/hrisliverecruit/erq_jobspec_version_4.jobspec?p_id=134229
Applications should include a CV and a supporting statement explaining your suitability for the post. Candidates are asked to submit two article length samples of written work and requested to have two references submitted by the closing date.
The closing date for applications is 12.00 noon on 31st May 2018. Interviews are expected to be held in Oxford on 14th June 2018.

1.Academy Colloquium “Whither Islamicate Digital Humanities? Analytics, Tools, Corpora”
International Conference
Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences
Amsterdam (NLD), 13-15 December 2018
Funded by the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences & the Netherlands eScience Center
Hosted by the “Bridging the Gap” project, Utrecht University (NLD), and the Digital Islamic Humanities Project, Brown University (RI, USA)
“Whither Islamicate Digital Humanities? Analytics, Tools, Corpora” is a three-day international conference dedicated to the budding field of Islamicate Digital Humanities (IDH). In recent years, the number of projects, initiatives and research programs in this field has greatly increased. Recognition of these efforts has already resulted in the formulation of guidelines for the evaluation of digital scholarship by the Middle East Studies Association, as well as a recent proposal for a set of principles to guide scholarly corpus building (IJMES 50, “Roundtable”). These developments signal a field gradually coming of age. Yet, most scholars would also agree that much work remains to be done before a plug-and-play, one-click survey of the vast Islamicate textual heritage becomes even remotely realistic. This conference seeks to take stock and showcase efforts currently underway in global IDH text-mining and identify ways of promoting collaboration and synergy. PROPOSALS (< 500 WORDS) FOR 20-MINUTE PRESENTATIONS ARE SOLICITED BY 31 MAY, 2018.
Travel funding is available. Please consult the following website for details:

We plan to allocate one special issue of the SSI in English language. This will be a primary attempt for possibly further developments in future. The submissions to this special issue should focus principally on the context of Iran, while comparative studies between Iran and other countries are also acceptable. This special issue covers a wide range of topics from a sociological perspective. The topics, for instance, can include (but, not limited to) issues such as social institutions, social capital, family, social deviances, gender, population, migration, youth, etc. Again, the submissions need to have a central focus on Iran from a sociological perspective.
At this stage, we accept abstracts with maximum 500 words. The abstract should clearly indicate the aim, methodology, data, and key results. Also, a short bio of the authors with max 500 words including university affiliation and contact details need to be added into abstracts.

Speaker: Dr. Eva-Maria Troelenberg – Kunsthistorisches Institut, Florence
Organised by: Dr Sussan Babaie – The Courtauld Institute of Art
Thursday 3 May 2018
6:00 pm – 7:00 pm
Kenneth Clark Lecture Theatre,
The Courtauld Institute of Art, Somerset House, Strand, London, WC2R 0RN
This talk will trace the history and fate of a prominent Safavid (16th century) medallion carpet. The piece had been traded to Europe probably at some point in Early Modern history, was purchased in Venice in the late 19th century by Renaissance connoisseur and museum man Wilhelm Bode, was displayed as one of the core pieces of the “Persian-Islamic Department” of the Berlin Museums after 1904, destroyed during the Second World War, and resurrected by means of restoration and publication in the 1950s. The itinerary of this textile on the one hand reflects the central—at times ideological—position of Persian culture within an emerging canon of Islamic arts during the first half of the 20th century. On the other hand, its material history of discovery, display, destruction and reconstruction challenges the teleological notion that is inherent to many cross-cultural museum collections.
