The lecture focusses on the extent of Ottoman Jewish women’s autonomy – whether, when, and in which contexts they had the space to forge their own paths in life, to marry for love, to pursue their own profes-sional interests, or achieve financial independence.

Ce colloque abordera les relations des juifs non seulement avec les musulmans majoritaires mais aussi avec les autres minorités : grecs orthodoxes, maronites, arméniens, coptes, ibadites, chiites, Européens en Afrique du Nord à l’époque coloniale … pour approcher au plus près la réalité de ces sociétés multiculturelles.

4. ONLINE “The Digital Orientalist’s Virtual Workshop and Conference 2021”, 26 June 2021
It will primarily focus on research methods. In the intra-pandemic world numerous conferences and academic meetings have gone digital, but there is still relatively limited space devoted to the discussion of digital research methods or to the processes of conducting digital humanities research within the field of oriental studies broadly defined.

5. ONLINE “Quatrième Congrès des études sur le Moyen-Orient et mondes musulmans / Fourth Congress of Middle East and Muslim Studies”, Aix-Marseille University, 28 June – 2 July 2021

6. Huitième édition des Journées de l’association des doctorants la Halqa sur le thème : « Mobilisations et engagements dans les mondes arabes et musulmans (XVIIe – XXIe siècles) », Aix-en-Provence, 1-2 juillet 2021

This workshop will analyse travel literature with regard to the practices, patterns and significations of travel. 9. International Conference: “Theological Disputes between Ašʿarīs and Ḥanbalīs and their Representations from the 11th/5th Century to Contemporary Wahhabi-Salafism”, CERMOM (Inalco), Paris, 18-19 November 2021
Ḥanbalism and Ašʿarism have been for more than a century represented as two inherently antagonistic theological schools. «Literalist», «fideist» and «traditionalist», Ḥanbalism is said to be the uncompromising opponent of rationalist currents. Contemporary Wahhabi-Salafism is perceived itself as a legitimate heir to this doctrine and a modern replica of this struggle.

PhD studentship:
The candidate will select a topic of Abbasid fiscal history for their dissertation, based on the study of papyrus documents written in Arabic dating to the 8th-10th century CE. It is imperative that they have previously studied Classical Arabic at the undergraduate and/or graduate level.
The award is open to UK AND overseas students. It will cover the UK or International level of tuition fee and an annual stipend of £15,285 and will be awarded for a maximum of three years of study and a fourth year for writing up; subject to satisfactory annual progress.
Applicants need to apply for the PhD programme in the first instance and then apply for the scholarship, the deadline for both the PhD and Scholarship applications is the 16th of August 2021.

17. Report Launch for the Universities & Muslim Seminaries Project (UMSEP)
Tuesday 8th June 5.30-6.30pm.
The project was undertaken mostly during 2019 was aimed at encouraging Muslim seminaries to pursue formal accreditation and become a part if the wider UK Higher Education sector. Our project created a collaboration between Islamic Seminaries in London, Birmingham and Blackburn, with universities in London, Birmingham and Leeds.
The report was meant to be launched in person, hosted by the House of Lords last year, but due to the pandemic has been postponed and put online instead. Your presence and support there will be greatly appreciated and this project will hopefully be the springboard for many fruitful developments in this field.
