Pakistan: Hazara Shia Muslims end protest in Quetta over killings

Islamabad, Pakistan – Dozens of Hazara Shia Muslim protesters in the southwestern city of Quetta have ended a five-day sit-in against a sustained campaign of targeted killings after meeting with the country’s army chief. The protesters dispersed on Wednesday after community leaders met with General Qamar Javed Bajwa, activist Jalila Haider told Al Jazeera.

This talk will trace the history and fate of a prominent Safavid (16^th century) medallion carpet. The piece had been traded to Europe probably at some point in Early Modern history, was purchased in Venice in the late 19th century by Renaissance connoisseur and museum man Wilhelm Bode, was displayed as one of the core pieces of the “Persian-Islamic Department” of the Berlin Museums after 1904, destroyed during the Second World War, and resurrected by means of restoration and publication in the 1950s. The itinerary of this textile on the one hand reflects the central—at times ideological—position of Persian culture within an emerging canon of Islamic arts during the first half of the 20th century. On the other hand, its material history of discovery, display, destruction and reconstruction challenges the teleological notion that is inherent to many cross-cultural museum collections.

6. The Gibb Memorial Trust offers two annual scholarships to students undertaking doctoral research in the field of the Trust’s activities.

The Gibb Memorial Trust’s Centenary Scholarship of up to £2,000 is available to postgraduate students at an advanced stage of their doctoral research in any area of Middle Eastern Studies (7th century to 1918) at a British university.

The A. H. Morton Memorial Scholarship for Doctoral Research in Classical Persian Studies is for a maximum of £3,000 and can be applied to any year of a course of doctoral study at a British university, including for an approved period of study abroad.

7. Workshop: “Iranian-Kurdish Cultural Production: Past, Present, Future”, Institute of Arab and Islamic Studies, University of Exeter, 17-18 September 2018

This workshop aims to open scholarly discussion on Iran’s Kurdish cultural heritage and its relation to contemporary Kurdish cultural creation. It also aims to analyse the current state of Iranian-Kurdish cultural production, its transformation, challenges and prospects. Iran is a colourful mosaic of cultures, languages and people, yet its pluralistic nature has not been fully represented in studies of the country.

10. “Summer School of Kurdish Studies”, Zahra Institute, University of Chicago, 25-29 May 2018

Sunni and Shia Symposium at UCI

Salam Al-Marayati, President of MPAC, noted that he is very optimistic of where Muslims in America are heading, in particular making progress towards celebrating its diversity amongst Sunni and Shia Muslims. In his closing remarks, Dr. Soboh, Chairman of the Islamic Shura Council, offered sensible methods to create harmony, including visiting the other madhab’s masjid and praying together.
