2. Scribal Cultures Across Eurasia

Princeton’s Program in Medieval Studies seeks proposals for 20-minute papers that will explore scribal cultures in different parts of the world between the 5th and the 15th century. Scribal cultures across the Eurasian continent are often more connected than is usually recognized. The long shadow of the Achaemenids can be traced in Demotic papyri and Bactrian inscriptions; Khotanese legal documents from Dunhuang used Indian and Chinese bits of formulary; Latin scribes and scholars of the late Antique and medieval West built upon forms and formularies that once belonged to the much wider world of the later Roman empire. Throughout the Middle Ages, connections to these wider horizons persisted, linking different scribal cultures, framing new conversations between them, and inspiring new scripts, vocabularies, and literatures. We welcome proposals from a broad range of disciplines and approaches that will address the documents themselves, discourses on documentary, scribal or legal cultures, and/or representations/ruminations of/on all of the above in literature, art, architecture, music, history of science, etc. This session will be an extension of the 2018-2019 programming at Princeton on this topic, which is part of an ongoing Princeton initiative seeking to connect not only divergent parts of medieval worlds but also this initiative with similar interests and projects at other research institutions and by other scholars.

3. In Lives of the Prophets: The Illustrations to Hafiz-i Abru’s “Assembly of Chronicles” Mohamad Reza Ghiasian analyses two extant copies of the Majmaʿ al-tawarikh produced for the Timurid ruler Shahrukh (r. 1405–1447). The first manuscript is kept in Topkapı Palace and the second is widely dispersed. Codicological analysis of these manuscripts not only allows a better understanding of Hafiz-i Abru’s contributions to rewriting earlier history, but has served to identify the existence of a previously unrecognised copy of the Jamiʿ al-tawarikh produced at Rashid al-Din’s scriptorium. Through a meticulous close reading of both text and image, Mohamad Reza Ghiasian convincingly proves that numerous paintings of the dispersed manuscript were painted over the text before its dispersal in the early twentieth century.

Caucasian Connections: Beyond Liminality

The relationship between the Caucasus and the outside world has been deeply implicated in its cultural development and structures of authority from the Maikop Culture onwards. Just as outside empires sought to control the Caucasus, its peoples and strategic routes and resources, so indigenous Caucasian elites sought the favour of outsiders in their struggles for power. At the same time, the Caucasus maintained a distinctive set of cultural traditions. This tension between access to the outside world and indigenous ‘Caucasian civilisation’ has been a central theme of scholarship on the region.

In order to promote interdisciplinary dialogue on these issues, we propose to organise one or several panels at the International Medieval Studies- the world’s second-largest gathering of medieval scholars and the largest in Europe. We welcome papers from the disciplines of History, Art History, Archaeology, Medieval Studies, Literature or Historical Linguistics on the cultures of the Caucasus (broadly defined), its relationship with the surrounding areas, or outside attitudes to the region. In particular, we seek papers that can address the material culture aspects of these relationships, given the overall conference theme of ‘materiality’. Possible subjects may include, but are not limited to:

–        material cultures of the Caucasus and its neighbours;

–        economic, social or cultural connections within or beyond the Caucasus;

–        the (un)importance of the outside world in the formation of Caucasian culture, society or identity;

–        outsider perceptions of the Caucasus.

UN calls for release of jailed Bahraini activist Nabeel Rajab

A special United Nations panel is urging Bahrain to immediately release imprisoned activist Nabeel Rajab, describing him as the victim of government-sponsored “persecution” for his political views in the island kingdom. The statement by the UN’s Working Group on Arbitrary Detention comes as Rajab is serving a five-year prison sentence for tweets he sent, a case widely criticized internationally as the kingdom’s government continues a crackdown on dissent.

Afghanistan: Suicide bomber targets school in Kabul

At least 48 people have been killed in a suicide bomb attack in front of an education centre in the west of the Afghan capital, Kabul, according to the health ministry. Wednesday’s attack in the Shia neighbourhood of Dasht-e-Barchi left dozens more injured, Waheed Majrooh, a spokesman for Afghanistan’s ministry of public health, told Al Jazeera.

Muslim world, covering a vast geographical area, is characterised by its ethnic, linguistic, and cultural multiplicity. Its diversity is precisely captured by Dale F. Eickelman: ‘The main challenge for the study of Islam is to describe how its universalistic or abstract principles have been realized in various social and historical contexts without representing Islam as a seamless essence on the one hand or as a plastic congeries of beliefs and practices on the other.’ (1987) However difficult it may be to describe such rich human/social/cultural phenomena, the pluralistic ideas and practices in Muslim world result from the interaction, violent or non-violent, between Muslims and other communities, and between Muslims themselves, the exchange and transmission of ideas, objects, and techniques, through various media, over the past fourteen centuries. How and why do/did people, ideas, and objects move from one place to another? Through what agencies do/did people, ideas, and objects travel? How did/does such movement impact upon other communities, their social and cultural dynamics? We welcome contributions from scholars and postgraduate students concerned with these questions from any relevant scholarly discipline, including history, anthropology, sociology, linguistics, area studies, politics, (comparative) literature, and religious studies. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

• Migration of tribes, Sufi orders, refugees, or any distinctive group in pre-modern and modern contexts
• Transmission or translation of ideas, artistic or literary motifs, or texts
• Travel & travelogues
• Exchange and interaction through commerce (e.g. slave trade)
• Spread of techniques or objects (e.g. introduction of paper)

Each presentation will last 20 minutes, including Q&A session. Abstracts between 300–400 words along with a one-page CV should be sent to Dr. I-Wen Su at isu@nccu.edu.tw, by 5.00 pm, October 15^th, 2018, with ‘ISIC 2019’ in the subject line. The presenters whose papers are accepted will be notified in late October and early November, and asked to submit the full papers by January 10^th, 2019.
