The launch event of ‘Imam Hussain Day’ in Scotland

The Scottish Ahlul Bayt Society, with the support of Interfaith Scotland and the United Nations House Scotland, launched Imam Hussain Day in Scotland on 12th October 2018. This will be an annual day in the national calendar to remember and celebrate the life, achievements, and influential teachings of Imam Hussain; a role model to over 1 Billion Muslims worldwide.

1.Emory University’s Islamic Civilizations Studies Ph.D. program is devoted to exploratory, problem-based interdisciplinary graduate education. ICIVS graduate students work with a faculty committee on specific research questions and theories of interpretation and are encouraged to conduct innovative and interdisciplinary research that highlights trans-regional and transnational connections between the Middle East, South Asia, Southeast Asia, and beyond. Students accepted into the ICIVS Ph.D. program design their own programs of study under the guidance of faculty advisors. Along with language training that prepares them for textual or field research, they receive training in research methods, historiography, Islamic Civilizations Studies as a field of study, and the pedagogy of Islam and Islamic Civilizations.

 

Possible programs of study supported by ICIVS include (but are not limited to): Islamic Civilization in the Mediterranean and Indian Ocean Basins; Muslim and Jewish Iberia and North Africa; Islam in Classical and Modern Arabic Literatures; Islam in Indo-Persian and Urdu Literatures; Judeo-Arabic Language, Linguistics, and Literatures; Politics and Society in the Muslim World; Islamic Political Philosophy; Muslim and Non-Muslim Minorities in Muslim Societies (with special emphasis on Christian, Jewish and Hindu communities); Diaspora Communities from the Muslim World; Muslim Minorities in Non-Muslim Societies; Islamic Civilizations and Post-Colonial Studies; Islamic Hybridities; Gender and Society in the Muslim World; and Frontier Interactions Between States and Peoples in the Muslim World.

2. The Department of Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations and the Humanities Collegiate Division at the University of Chicago are announcing a position for a full-time Lecturer in Arabic, for a one-year, renewable, appointment. The successful candidate will typically teach a minimum of two courses of various levels of Arabic (elementary, intermediate, or high intermediate) in each of three quarters (Autumn, Winter, Spring) to both undergraduate and graduate students. Additional duties of the position for Academic Year 2019-2020 are contributing to program development through the organization and promotion of regular Arabic film nights.

The successful candidate must be able to function at the Superior Level of Modern Standard Arabic and have experience teaching Arabic as a foreign language at the college level. Preference will be given to candidates proficient in an Arabic dialect. A Master’s degree in a relevant discipline is required by the start date of the appointment; a Ph.D. is desirable.

4. Every year HIAA sponsors a competition and awards the Margaret B. Ševčenko Prize for the best unpublished essay written by a junior scholar (pre-dissertation graduate student to three years after the Ph.D. degree) on any aspect of Islamic visual culture. The Ševčenko Prize recipient receives an award of $500 and a citation, generally presented at HIAA’s annual business meeting. The Prize is named in memory of Margaret Bentley Ševčenko, the first and long-serving Managing Editor of Muqarnas, a journal devoted to the visual culture of the Islamic world and sponsored by the Aga Khan Program for Islamic Architecture at Harvard and at MIT.

The competition is open to HIAA members only, and the winning essay will be considered for publication by the Muqarnas Editorial Board.

1.Arabic Teaching Fellow, University of Edinburgh

Islamic & Middle Eastern Studies, part of the School of Literatures, Languages and Cultures, seeks to appoint a Teaching Fellow in Arabic to teach within the framework of the School’s courses in undergraduate and postgraduate Arabic. This will primarily involve teaching and assessment on the undergraduate Arabic programmes, especially course organising and teaching on Intensive and Advanced Arabic. Other tasks, such as design of teaching materials, assessment and marking in both the undergraduate and postgraduate Arabic programmes, and supervising Arabic Research Reports will also be required.

The successful candidate will have experience in the design and delivery of language teaching within the higher education sector, and the ability to deliver courses and assessment in colloquial and Modern Standard Arabic language. They will be also expected to contribute to the administration of the subject area, including course organisation.

This fixed-term post is available from January to May 2019 and is offered on a full-time basis (35 hours per week).

2. ESCAS 2019 Exeter: The Globality of Central Asia

Held at the University of Exeter (UK), the theme for the 16^th conference is The Globality of Central Asia.  We invite proposals for papers, panels, roundtables and sessions in non-traditional formats covering all aspects of Central Asian Studies across the humanities and social sciences.

We particularly encourage proposals which link Central Asia to its global context, historically and contemporaneously. We encourage studies of this geography which engage both territory, space and place. These may include the studies of Central Asia’s migrations and diaspora, its ethnic minority populations, its offshore and extraterritorial spaces, and its place in global and imperial histories. This globality may be visible in archaeologies, cultural studies and pre-modern histories, as well as in modern social, economic and political patterns across borders.

Our conference will assess globalizations from below as well as those from above; we therefore invite papers addressing the interpellation of localities and globalities: How are the individuals and communities of Central Asia related to global processes?

ACOR-CAORC Post-Graduate Fellowship: Two or more two- to six-month fellowships for post-doctoral scholars and scholars with a terminal degree in their field, pursuing research or publication projects in the natural and social sciences, humanities, and associated disciplines relating to the Near East. U.S. citizenship required. Maximum award is $32,400. Awards must be used between June 15, 2019 and December 31, 2020 and Fellows must reside at ACOR. Funding for this fellowship provided by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs.

ACOR-CAORC Fellowship: Two or more two- to six-month fellowships for masters and doctoral students. Fields of study include all areas of the humanities and the natural and social sciences. Topics should contribute to scholarship in Near Eastern studies. U.S. citizenship required. Maximum award is $23,800. Awards must be used between June 15, 2019 and December 31, 2020 and Fellows must reside at ACOR. Jennifer C. Groot Memorial Fellowship: Up to three awards of $1,500 each to support beginners in archaeological fieldwork who have been accepted as team members on archaeological projects with ASOR/CAP affiliation in Jordan. Open to undergraduate or graduate students of U.S. or Canadian citizenship as well as individuals who graduated less than 12 months before February 1st, 2019 and/or have been accepted to a Graduate program for Fall 2019.

Bert and Sally de Vries Fellowship: One award of $1,500 to support a student for participation on an archaeological project or research in Jordan. Senior project staff members whose expenses are being borne largely by the project are ineligible. Open to enrolled undergraduate or graduate students of any nationality except Jordanian citizens.

Harrell Family Fellowship: One award of $2,000 to support a graduate student for participation on an archaeological project or research in Jordan. Pierre and Patricia Bikai Fellowship: Two awards for one month each or one two-month award for residency at ACOR in Amman. The fellowship includes room and board at ACOR and a monthly stipend of $600.

Burton MacDonald and Rosemarie Sampson Fellowship: One award for either eight weeks residency at ACOR for research in the fields of Ancient Near Eastern languages and history, archaeology, Bible studies, or comparative religion, or a travel grant to assist with participation in an archaeological field project in Jordan. The ACOR residency fellowship option includes room and board at ACOR and a monthly stipend of $400. The travel grant option provides a single payment of $2,000 to help with any project related expenses. Both options are open to enrolled undergraduate or graduate students of Canadian citizenship or landed immigrant status.

Kenneth W. Russell Fellowship: One award of $1,800 to support a graduate student participating on an archaeological project or pursuing independent research in Jordan. For the 2019–2020 cycle, the Russell fellowship is only open only to enrolled graduate students of non-Jordanian nationality.

James A. Sauer Fellowship: One award of $1,250 toward educational assistance for a Jordanian student enrolled in an archaeology or cultural heritage degree program in any country. For the 2019–2020 cycle, the Sauer fellowship is only open to enrolled graduate students of Jordanian nationality.

Frederick-Wenger Memorial Endowment: Two awards of $1,500 to assist a Jordanian student with the cost of their education. Eligibility is not limited to a specific field of study, but preference will be given to study related to Jordan’s cultural heritage. Candidates must be Jordanian citizens and currently enrolled as undergraduate or graduate students in a Jordanian university.

Jordanian Graduate Student Scholarship: Four awards of $3,000 each to assist Jordanian graduate students with the annual costs of their academic programs during the period May 1, 2019 through May 31, 2020. Candidates must be Jordanian citizens and currently enrolled in either a Master’s or Doctoral program in a Jordanian university. Eligibility is limited to students in programs related to Jordan’s cultural heritage (for example: archaeology, anthropology, linguistics/epigraphy, history, conservation, museum studies, and cultural resource management related issues). Awardees who demonstrate excellent progress in their programs will be eligible to apply in consecutive years.

ACOR-TWL Publication Fellowship: One award for six months of $25,200 for a recent Ph.D or a Ph.D student who will have submitted the dissertation by December 31, 2018. Award must be used between January 15, 2019 and September 30, 2019. Open to all citizens with a strong research background in Nabataean archaeology or the Classical Near East. The selected fellow is expected to help assess the archive and related artifacts from the Temple of the Winged Lions (American Expedition to Petra and TWLCRM Initiative), carry out a bibliographical review of the Temple of the Winged Lions, and prepare a report that draws upon key research questions associated with the site. This is a residential fellowship and residency at ACOR is required.

ADHRB, BIRD and ECDHR Condemn the NIHR’s Whitewashing of Human Rights Abuses in Bahraini Prisons

2 October 2018 – Yesterday, the Bahrain National Institution for Human Rights (NIHR) issued a statement denying the allegations of mistreatment reported by three women in Bahrain’s Isa Town Women’s Prison.
