1.The Department of Languages, Linguistics, and Comparative Literature at Florida Atlantic University invites applications for a tenure-line Assistant Professorship in Comparative Literature with a specialization in comparative approaches to Arabic cultural studies and literature. The successful candidate will hold a Ph.D. in Comparative Literature, Arabic Studies, or a closely related field by time of appointment. Superior oral and written proficiency in Modern Standard Arabic and English required; command of another major language offered in the department highly desired. Typical teaching load is 2/3. Applicants’ research and teaching should engage the Arab world broadly writ and demonstrate an ability to cross regional and national boundaries. Comparisons of the Eastern Mediterranean basin, North Africa, or the Arab diaspora, with sub-Saharan African, Europe, Southeast Asia, or the Americas are encouraged. Of particular interest are theoretical approaches related to social and political change, gender studies, film studies, transnationalism, or identity. The chosen candidate will be responsible for leading the Arabic Studies program at all levels: teaching lower-division Arabic; supervising GTAs and adjuncts teaching Arabic; developing the upper-division curriculum; and building bridges to other programs both inside and outside the college. 3. “Breaking and Creating Boundaries in the Middle East”

The Nordic Society for Middle Eastern Studies (NSM) (http://thenordicsociety.se), the University of Helsinki and the Finnish Institute in the Middle East (http://www.fime.fi/) are pleased to announce the call for papers for the Eleventh Nordic Conference on Middle Eastern Studies. The conference is the 20th anniversary celebration of NSM, which is an independent non-profit association for scholars in the Nordic countries working on the Middle East. It covers all subjects in the humanities and social sciences, from antiquity to the present day. The NSM conference takes place every third year in one of the Nordic countries, and is also open for participants beyond the Nordic countries. This time the theme for the multidisciplinary conference is “Breaking and Creating Boundaries in the Middle East”.

The Middle East and North Africa have been going through a tumultuous process of change since the uprisings of 2011. In the process, many old social, political and even physical boundaries have been crossed, broken or re-created. The concept of “boundaries” now plays a significant role in social sciences and humanities. In addition to actual physical boundaries, the concept is also related to the study of identity, religion, gender, immigration, minorities and many other phenomena. Paper proposals are encouraged to explore and discuss the social, political, geographical, religious boundaries from all fields and disciplines of the Middle Eastern studies, including – but not limited to – the following fields: Middle Eastern history, anthropology, religion, politics, sociology, language, and literature. Also papers on other relevant themes pertinent to current Middle Eastern Studies are welcome.

The confirmed keynote speakers are Professor Sari Hanafi (The American University of Beirut) and Professor Lara Deeb (Scripps College).

For the period prior to the fifteenth century, historians of Islamic societies have few primary documents or archives at hand, and even less for the first three centuries of the Empire. Most documents are coming from Egypt and more and more are discovered in Khurāsān. But for the rest of the early Islamic world these documents are largely missing. Islamic coins are the most prolific epigraphic sources for pre-1500 history in the Middle East. Nevertheless, their potential for understanding history is often neglected. Islamic coins as bearers of texts – there can be up to 150 words on one coin – are unique in the history of civilization. They offer the often needed primary independent evidence for administrative practices and state authority produced in the course of events. Their design includes numerous hints, which have to be decoded. The coin is able to serve different historiographic fields such as political, economic, industrial, social and legal history as well as Islamic art and material culture. As groups, coins constitute a source of their own – a sequence of changing texts generated from coins over the decades from a single mint can serve as narrative for local and imperial history.

Abstract:
The Turban has been worn by Muslims since the early period of Islamic history. This paper examines the significance of the turban in Twelver Shi‘ism. It argues that the turban and its color have been used to enhance the social and religious status of the descendants (sayyids) of the Prophet Muhammad. The paper also discusses the importance attached to the method of tying the turban and demonstrates how social pressure forced scholars to abandon a practice established by the Prophet and Imams. It will also argue that the method of trying the turban was used as an ideological tool among Shi‘i scholars.

Saudi Arabia’s “Reforms” Don’t Include Tolerance of Shia Community

Saudi Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman has recently made moves likely to appeal to the country’s Shia minority. This includes neutering the country’s once-powerful religious establishment, which has spewed anti-Shia vitriol and demonized Shia religious practices for decades, as well as changes to the 2018-19 Saudi school curriculum to remove some anti-Shia images and rhetoric.

2. OPEN RANK TENURE LINE POSITION IN ARABIC STUDIES (University of Texas at Austin)

The Department of Middle Eastern Studies at the University of Texas at Austin invites applications for an open-rank tenure line position in Arabic Studies. The position will begin in August 2019.

The position will focus on either Modern or Medieval Arabic Studies. While disciplinary specialization is open, preference will be given to literature and culture, broadly defined. The ability to work across language and cultural boundaries, such as Hebrew, Persian, or Turkish, while not required, are strongly preferred.

Duties include teaching both undergraduate and graduate courses, and serving in the doctoral programs in Arabic Studies, and other related programs like Comparative Literatures and Middle Eastern Languages and Cultures. All faculty, in the Department Middle Eastern Studies are expected to pursue a strong record of research and publication, while also engaging in service to the Department, College, University, and profession. The Department places a high premium on collegiality and maintaining a diverse and hospitable working environment.  Salary is dependent upon position and qualifications. As per university procedures, background and academic credential checks are conducted as appropriate.

QUALIFICATIONS

The successful candidate should have at least near-native fluency in Arabic, and must demonstrate excellent in research and publication, as well as teaching. They must also have the ability to train and supervise graduate students. Applicants should also be able to effectively teach large undergraduate classes. Relevant program-building experience and leadership in the field will also be given significant weight in the evaluation process. All applicants must have had their Ph.D. in hand prior to August 2016.

DİYÂR publishes original and as yet unpublished contributions from the humanities, cultural studies and social sciences with emphasis on the fields of history, literary studies, sociolinguistics, political science, sociology, economics, cultural anthropology/ethnology, religious studies, music studies, cultural geography, education and law.

Through its focused content and high peer-review standards, DİYÂR intends to be a leading international academic periodical on Turkic and Iranian research.

For the first issue of DİYÂR, to be published in July 2019, GTOT welcomes proposals for papers. Please submit your article (max. 10,000 words, footnotes included) and an abstract (150-200 words) with a list of keywords (up to 6) by 17th Dec, 2018.
