This project aims to bring together all the Arabic, Persian, and Turkish (or even in other languages) inscriptions of the Muslim world until the year 1000 AH, that is to say, the period usually identified as the Middle Ages.
The collection and computerization of the inscriptions began in the late 1980s, the whole Muslim world now being covered. Currently, the database contains some 49,500 cards that critically present the text of the inscriptions already published, while certain texts are presented for the first time. Inscriptions known to exist because they are mentioned in publications of all kinds are also taken into consideration. Many of the inscriptions are illustrated with photographs from the Max van Berchem Foundation Photo Library as well as from other collections. It is also now possible to consult the website in English (however the contents of the cards remain in French).
The database continues to be regularly enhanced and supplemented. Please take note that the database has moved to a new website address.

5. Part-time lecturer in Arabic (Modern and Classical), University of Chicago
The Department of Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations and the College of the University of Chicago seeks to add to the University’s existing program in modern Arabic language. We invite applications for appointment as a part-time Lecturer able to contribute to both Modern Arabic and Classical Arabic course offerings. The start date of the appointment will be September 1, 2020. The initial appointment will be for one year, with review and reappointment determined by a collective bargaining agreement between the University and the Service Employees International Union. The position is benefits-eligible.
The teaching assignment for this position will be four courses in the Arabic language across three quarters. These courses will typically include a yearlong sequence in High Intermediate Classical Arabic and a fourth course in advanced readings in Arabic, which may include both modern and classical idioms. The selected candidate will also be required to engage in regular professional development.
Qualifications
Applicants should demonstrate previous language teaching experience at the college or post-secondary level, in both Modern and Classical Arabic. An M.A. degree or equivalent is required, and a PhD is preferred. Candidates with specialized training in second language acquisition, second language pedagogy, and/or assessment are especially encouraged to apply.

Kuwait and Bahrain have rolled out some of the most invasive Covid-19 contact-tracing apps in the world, putting the privacy and security of their users at risk, Amnesty International says. The rights group found the apps were carrying out live or near-live tracking of users’ locations by uploading GPS co-ordinates to a central server.

THE TESTIMONY OF HISTORY: TO LIVE AND OVERCOME THE EPIDEMIC IN THE PRESENT

The new coronavirus (SARS-CoV 2) and COVID-19 brought unexpected challenges to Humanity. The answer to these challenges is more than a quest for biomedical science and transcends health issues. In this context and seeking complementarity between health sciences and the emerging field of health humanities, this Symposium is promoted, which aims to recourse to historical knowledge to understand and help to live the difficult present time.
This role attributed to the humanities and historical studies has been highlighted in recent months in various initiatives (webinars, online conferences, special magazine numbers, interviews, opinion articles) carried out by various institutions and civil society, and in several countries.
This seminar aims to be a space for knowledge sharing on the theme of epidemics, in different geographical contexts, national and foreign, limited to the Middle and Early Modern Ages, seeking to establish a bridge between the past and the present. It will be held in two days and consists of brief presentations (10 min.) carried out by invited researchers, followed by debate, and open to all those interested in participating.

The Politics of Prognostication in the Cairo Sultanate
In today’s complex and ever-changing circumstances, who wouldn’t want infallible means for interpreting the world around them and even predicting future events? While today’s leaders look to their medical, economic, military and other expert advisers, historically rulers across the world have also consulted astrologers, dream-interpreters and specialists in other forms of divination and occult sciences.
The Mamlūk sultans of late-medieval Egypt and Syria were no different in this regard. Many manuscripts copied within the Cairo Sultanate have survived and a number of them are on various methods of interpreting the present or foretelling the future. Since some of these manuscripts were produced for politically high-ranking patrons, we are in the privileged position of being able to read over the shoulders of Mamlūk sultans and amīrs (military commanders) and get a feeling for the place of prognostication in Mamlūk politics.

In order to promote and highlight excellence in research, the Syrian Studies Association awards annual prizes for the best writing on Bilad al-Sham until 1918 and on Syria in the period following. This prize alternates between recognizing books, articles, and dissertations.
In 2020, the SSA seeks submissions for the most outstanding PhD dissertation published between July 1, 2018 and June 30, 2020.

A full-time highly motivated Research Associate (RA) is being sought for a research project led by Dr. Eid Mohamed and funded by the Qatar National Research Fund (QNRF) titled, “Computational Study of Culture: Cultural Analytics for Modern Arab and Islamic Studies.” The project will operate within the Research & Grants Department led by the Director at the Doha Institute for Graduate Studies (DI).
We welcome applications from scholars in Arab studies with a specialization in literary, rhetorical, cultural, or historical studies. We are particularly interested in those who engage in research areas that bring the field of Arab Literature/Humanities into the digital age and the digital humanities domain. Scholars with research that explores the critical and cultural significance of using digital tools and methods in the context of questions of East-West encounters, representation, culture and politics are highly preferred.
The project’s research at this stage will consist of the exploration and analysis of discrete sets of texts that are relevant for the project’s time, space, and scope. The successful candidate is an innovative scholar who will bring theoretical, methodological, and technical expertise to the QNRF NPRP project on the computational study of Arab culture and history.

Digital Technology and Pilgrimage: Shiʿi Rituals of Arbaʿin in Iraq
Since the collapse of the Baʿathist regime after the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq in 2003, Shiʿi Muslim rituals, in particular the annual commemorations of Arbaʿin, have seen a revival in popularity. Based on two fieldwork studies conducted during Arbaʿin in 2016 and 2017, the present study attempts to examine the changing characteristics of the rituals.

We are most interested in books that break new ground conceptually, are comparative and/or interdisciplinary, that emphasize the intercultural/interregional/inter-religious contact. Books from any period will be considered and are welcome from history, art and material culture, literary and cultural studies, anthropology, and sociology.

12. Articles for Three Special Symposium Issues for the “Journal of Muslim Philanthropy & Civil Society (JMPCS)“
“Philanthropy” includes practices of generosity ranging from the activity of discrete individuals of all socio-economic backgrounds to that of organizations, social movements, and a variety of other forms of civic engagement. Articles are invited from Anthropology, Art, History, Political Science, Religious Studies, Sociology, Public Affairs, Nonprofit Management, Business, Philanthropy, etc. $5,000 in matching funds are provided for each special issue’s guest editor to host a research convening at their academic institution.
