3. ONLINE Lecture in Mighty Magazines Online Series: “Islamic History in Retrospective” by Dr. Zahiye Kundos (EUME Forum Transregional Studies Fellow), Berlin, 15 June 2021, 5:00 pm – 6:00 pm CEST

During 1884 Jamāl al-Dīn al-Afghānī (d. 1897) and Muḥammad ʿAbduh (d. 1905), two of the pioneering thinkers of modern Islam, met in Paris and co-edited the transregional anti-colonial journal al-ʿUrwa al-wuthqā la ʿinfișām lahā (“The most unfailing hold which shall never give way”). Literal reconstruction of this political-theological text provides an opportunity to shed light on the dramatic times of the 1880s.

Through the examples of ʿAyn al-Quḍāt al-Hamadānī and Shihāb al-Dīn al-Suhrawardī this lecture will first present how the authors of literary sources of history constructed their narratives of scholarly apostasy in accordance with their own sectarian and political affiliations. It will then present the juridical procedure at play when scholars were accused of apostasy.

12. Three Qur’an manuscripts from Aceh in the British Library

Aceh is renowned as one of the most fervently Islamic regions of Southeast Asia. Situated on the northern tip of the island of Sumatra, it was the site of the first Muslim kingdoms in the archipelago in the 13th century, and Aceh has also produced many famous Islamic scholars and writers. There are probably more illuminated Qur’an manuscripts known today from Aceh than from anywhere else in the Malay world, and nearly all conform closely to what can be termed the Acehnese style of manuscript illumination (cf. Gallop 2004). The British Library holds three Qur’an manuscripts from Aceh, and all have been fully digitised.

Call for Applications and Nominations

We are pleased to announce our annual prize for the best article about Middle Eastern history written by a female-identifying or gender non-conforming graduate student (Masters or PhD). The award aims to bring attention to the innovative scholarship women and gender non-conforming students are producing in the field. The article (not to exceed 8,000 words) can be published, under review, submitted, or in the final stages of preparation for submission to a journal. The article may be about any period in Middle Eastern history and may address any subfield in the discipline. The nominee must not have been awarded a Doctorate prior to October 1, 2020.

Articles may be nominated by the author, academic advisors, professors, or journal editors; journals may nominate up to three articles. Jointly published articles are acceptable, but both authors must be graduate students; the co-author may be male. Articles that have appeared in collections will be considered but only if the articles were published for the first time in the year prior to the application deadline; reprints will not be considered. Winners will be notified in the fall and will be publicly acknowledged in an official announcement at the WHOME meeting at the Middle East Studies Association Annual Meeting. The winning author shall also receive a $250 award.

Please encourage your students, colleagues, and peers to apply. Applications are due by 11:59 PST on July 31, 2021.
