Call for Applications and Nominations

We are pleased to announce our annual prize for the best article about Middle Eastern history written by a female-identifying or gender non-conforming graduate student (Masters or PhD). The award aims to bring attention to the innovative scholarship women and gender non-conforming students are producing in the field. The article (not to exceed 8,000 words) can be published, under review, submitted, or in the final stages of preparation for submission to a journal. The article may be about any period in Middle Eastern history and may address any subfield in the discipline. The nominee must not have been awarded a Doctorate prior to October 1, 2020.

Articles may be nominated by the author, academic advisors, professors, or journal editors; journals may nominate up to three articles. Jointly published articles are acceptable, but both authors must be graduate students; the co-author may be male. Articles that have appeared in collections will be considered but only if the articles were published for the first time in the year prior to the application deadline; reprints will not be considered. Winners will be notified in the fall and will be publicly acknowledged in an official announcement at the WHOME meeting at the Middle East Studies Association Annual Meeting. The winning author shall also receive a $250 award.

PhD studentship:

The candidate will select a topic of Abbasid fiscal history for their dissertation, based on the study of papyrus documents written in Arabic dating to the 8th-10th century CE.  It is imperative that they have previously studied Classical Arabic at the undergraduate and/or graduate level.

The award is open to UK AND overseas students. It will cover the UK or International level of tuition fee and an annual stipend of £15,285 and will be awarded for a maximum of three years of study and a fourth year for writing up; subject to satisfactory annual progress.

Applicants need to apply for the PhD programme in the first instance and then apply for the scholarship, the deadline for both the PhD and Scholarship applications is the 16th of August 2021.

17. Report Launch for the Universities & Muslim Seminaries Project (UMSEP)

Tuesday 8th June 5.30-6.30pm. 

The project was undertaken mostly during 2019 was aimed at encouraging Muslim seminaries to pursue formal accreditation and become a part if the wider UK Higher Education sector. Our project created a collaboration between Islamic Seminaries in London, Birmingham and Blackburn, with universities in London, Birmingham and Leeds.

The report was meant to be launched in person, hosted by the House of Lords last year, but due to the pandemic has been postponed and put online instead. Your presence and support there will be greatly appreciated and this project will hopefully be the springboard for many fruitful developments in this field.

Guidelines for Submitting a Proposal for a Special Issue

Proposals for a special issue should include the following information:

1. A proposed title for the special issue
2. A one-page description of the focus of the issue; including a brief description of a) why the special issue is a good fit for ArOr, its mission, and readership; b) why the topic or theme is timely; c) how the special issue will contribute to the advancement of the academic debate around the topic of inquiry
3. A curriculum vitae of the Guest Editor
4. A list of prospective contributors, the titles of their articles, a brief abstract with the inclusion of 6-8 keywords for each abstract, and the total length of the special issue
5. A proposed timeline for production.

We will give preference to contributions of a transregional and transdisciplinary character and emphasizing South and Southeast Asia.

Guest Editor Responsibilities

1. All the tasks included in the guidelines for the submission of the proposal for a special issue
2. Managing all exchanges with the contributors and with the editorial office of Archiv orientalní
3. Coordination of the special issue
4. Communicating to contributors that submitting a paper is not a guarantee for publication
5. Gathering of all articles and submitting these to ArOr
6. Receiving all articles and reviews and forwarding these to the respective authors
7. Negotiating revisions with ArOr
8. Ensuring the timeline is respected

Decision Process

Proposals for a special, thematic issue are assessed in two stages. They are first submitted to the Editorial Board for approval. If the editorial team deems it interesting according to the scope of the journal, proposals are then submitted to the journal’s editorial board.

If approved, all articles are sent to two referees for a double-blind peer-review process. Comments and requests for changes on each individual article will be collected by the Executive Editor and forwarded to the Guest Editor for discussion and approval.

Publication Timeline:

Notification of accepted issue: August 1, 2021

Full paper submission deadline: December 31, 2021

Archiv orientalní (ArOr – http://aror.orient.cas.cz) is an indexed, peer-reviewed academic journal dedicated to the cultures and societies of Africa, Asia, and the Middle East. ArOr is listed in Scopus, Art and Humanities Citation Index, and ERIH Plus and is accessible via ProQuest and EBSCO. The journal was founded in 1929 and has an uninterrupted history of high academic standards since then, aiming at reaching both the academic public as well as a wider readership interested in the areas covered. Archiv orientalní is published three times per year (May, September, and December), of which one is devoted to the publication of a special, thematic issue. Topics for the special issue can range in scope, discipline, and time, provided they are concerned with the geographical areas covered by the journal; interdisciplinary or cross-region themes are strongly supported. Thematic issues normally consist of an introductory article (approximately 5,000 to 10,000 words) and 6-8 articles (7,000 to 10,000 words). 3. AIS2022 Biennial Conference of Iranian Studies will take place at the Faculty of Philology of the University of Salamanca from August 30 to September 2, 2022. The AIS2022 Conference is planned as a primarily in person event, but will also accommodate online proposals for those who cannot physically attend for whatever reason.

Registration of papers / posters / panel / roundtables / special sessions will be open from June 1 to July 30, 2021 and will include the following categories of participants:

1. Participants of the AIS2020 who will present in person their previously accepted paper / poster / panel / roundtable / special session with no change. No extra fees will be charged in this case.

The global situation caused by the Covid-19 pandemics has been difficult for all and, among other plans, forced us to reschedule the organization of our AIS2020 Conference. Although we cannot foresee how the pandemics will develop worldwide next year, we are nevertheless optimistic about the future and are strongly committed to continue our arrangements for an in person conference.

First of all, the AIS2022 Conference will be organized carefully taking into account all the health measures in place at the time and the maximum capacity of each room available by then. The academic year 2020-21 in Salamanca has been in person since its very beginning, and the University of Salamanca has succeeded in guaranteeing that those measures were very effective in allowing a secure environment and in preventing contagion. In this regard, participants in person can be sure of our strong commitment to prioritize their health and security during this event.

Secondly, cameras and other equipment for online teaching and streaming were installed in all rooms of our faculties during the academic year 2020-21, and they will be available for connecting in person and online participants.

10. Conference: Knowledge Systems and Ottoman-European Encounters. Spatial and Social Dynamics

Research Questions:

Knowledge Systems and Ottoman-European Encounters: Spatial and Social Dynamics Science, commerce, military, religion and authorities: in all these domains, everyday knowledge was from time immemorial collected and condensed into written knowledge. But content, structure and social relevance of knowledge are always historically contingent. The conference is asking thus for the importance of the Ottoman Empire in a history of European knowledge in the Early Modern Period. We focus on knowledge from or about the Ottoman Empire. We address two broader questions: from a spatial perspective, how can the Ottoman Empire be included into a European history of knowledge? From a social viewpoint: how was knowledge inside or about the Ottoman Empire organized and what kind of social functions can there be distinguished?

Spaces of knowledge
The development of Early Modern science was strongly influenced by (west-)European-Ottoman encounters. But to what degree was the Ottoman Empire an object of European knowledge systems? What contexts and players promoted or impeded the circulation of knowledge between the Ottoman Empire and other regions of Europe, including its Eastern parts? Which channels and forms were used for the communication of knowledge? What was the status of knowledge from or about the Ottoman Empire in European knowledge hierarchies and classification-systems?

Social functions
History of knowledge about the Ottoman Empire has long been focused on a classical history of science, technology and religion. Only recently, there is a shift towards conceptualising knowledge as a fundamental social practice for all kinds of human interaction. We are thus interested in social practices and discourses and their organizing or fragmentizing effects on social relations. What was the social relevance of different kinds of knowledge and which were the places of knowledge-production? Which kind of knowledge was privileged or legitimized by whom and in which contexts?

Manuscript Studies brings together scholarship from around the world and across disciplines related to the study of pre-modern manuscript books and documents. This peer-reviewed journal is open to contributions that rely on both traditional methodologies of manuscript study and those that explore the potential of new ones. We publish articles that engage in a larger conversation on manuscript culture and its continued relevance in today’s world and highlight the value of manuscript evidence in understanding our shared cultural and intellectual heritage. Studies that incorporate digital methodologies to further understanding of the physical and conceptual structures of the manuscript book are encouraged. A separate section, entitled Annotations, features research in progress and digital project reports.

15. AMECYS Call for Papers:

Graduate Student Paper Prize

Submission deadline:  August 1, 2021

The Association of Middle East Children’s and Youth Studies (AMECYS) calls graduate students engaged in the study of children and youth in the region to submit papers to the AMECYS graduate student paper prize. A cash prize of $100 will be awarded to the winner at the Middle East Studies Association (MESA) of North America’s annual meeting in Montreal, Canada, October 28-31, 2021.

Papers can be submitted in any capacity that aligns with AMECYS’ mission statement:

The AMECYS is a private, non-profit, international association for scholars with an interest in the study of children and youth in the Middle East, North Africa and their diasporic communities. Through interdisciplinary programs, publications, and services, AMECYS promotes innovative scholarship, facilitates global academic exchange, and enhances public understanding about Middle Eastern children and youth in diverse times and places. 

Requirements for submission:

• Papers should be original scholarship. However, papers readying for journal submission are acceptable (i.e., not yet submitted for publication or published).
• No more than 7,500 words (excluding endnotes and bibliographies)
• Standard font, Double-spaced, 1” margins, IJMES standards for endnotes and transliteration
• AMECYS membership in good standing
• Proof of registered graduate student enrolment for the 2021-2022 academic year may be requested at a later date
