1.Tuesday, June 1st, the Third International Meeting of the Avicenna Study Group“Surveying the summae: Comparisons and Contrasts among Avicenna‘s Eight Main Works” will have its first of seven online sessions.

We will meet weekly on Zoom, every Tuesday at 5pm CEST (German time), should be 8am PDT/11am EDT/4pm BST/6pm EEST/7.30pm IRDT/midnight JST (from June 1st to July 13th).

Throughout her memoir, Khalidi records how a pioneering generation of Arab feminists built connections with one another and with feminists in other world regions in order to support the cause of Arab, and later Palestinian, independence. Her memoir offers a unique window into the origins and evolution of the women’s movement in the Eastern Mediterranean.

4. 4^th IDEO Conference: “The Cairo Edition of the Qurʾān (1924): Texts, Histories and Challenges”, Dominican Institute for Oriental Studies, Cairo, 16-17 October 2021

The conference examines the Cairo edition of the Qurʾān printed under the authority of the al-Azhar committee in 1924. The edition`s advent bears a significance that goes beyond the sphere of belief and takes an important place in the history of Islamic civilisation, including the history of institutions, material history, history of religious thought and history of Islamic studies.

7. Award for Best Article in Kurdish Studies Published in 2020, University of Central Florida

All articles published in English peer-reviewed journals related to Kurdish politics will be considered for the award. The award is open to all disciplines under social sciences and humanities. The primary author of the article needs to be a graduate student, post-doc, independent scholar, assistant professor or equivalent. The winner will be awarded $500. Self-nominations are welcome.

12. Online Conference – Persian Arts of the Book Conference – 13-14 July 2021

This conference gathers scholars from around the world with expert curators from Oxford and beyond to reflect on the Persian manuscript tradition. In a series of short presentations and thematic panel discussions we will examine the poetry, history, and artistic expression contained in these treasures, and the materials and crafts that contributed to making the manuscripts, as well as the history and science of their preservation. Starting with a focus on the history of collections now at the Bodleian Library, presentations from former Bahari Visiting Fellows at the Bodleian Libraries represent the state of the field of Persian manuscript studies today.

OPEN CALL FOR PAPERS Occhialì – Rivista sul Mediterraneo islamico is a semi-annual scientific journal concerned with the publication of studies, researches and reflections on Islam and the Mediterranean. Active since 2017, it has promoted over time a broad discussion on transversal themes from different perspectives: historical, linguistic, political, philosophic, juridical, sociological, psychological or pedagogical, trying to represent the heterogeneity that characterizes its area of interest.

For issue 9/2021, it has been decided not to limit the contributions to a specific theme, but to open it to the proposals of scholars, so as to leave an open space and cast light on emerging horizons of study and research. Therefore, essays, analyses and translations concerning the Islamic Mediterranean are all acceptable: from religious forms to histories, from institutions to languages, social movements, changes, cultural representations, migratory flows, in ancient times as well as today.

The articles, written in English, French, Italian or Spanish, must be sent by 15 November 2021 to rivista.occhiali@unical.it in a format compatible with the procedure of blind review: a file will have to include the author’s name and surname, email address, a short biographical note, title and abstract (150 words in English), 3- 5 keywords; the other file will have to include the contribution without any reference to the author or to their known works that might point back to them. The articles, formatted according to the norms, shall not exceed 30,000 characters including spaces and excluding the bibliography.

Online Summer School on Shiʿi Studies
Ahl-ul-Bayt University, Ferdowsi University of Mashhad, and Hekmat Institute will hold an online summer school.

The International Intensive Academic Course on Shi’i Studies by Hikmat International Institute will cover the history, key doctrines, branches, rituals and practices, spiritual teachings as well as political thought of Shi’I Islam. It will mainly focus on the Twelver Shi’I tradition, to which the majority of the Shia belong today. This is a university-level course and is designed mainly for students and academics who wish to enhance their understanding of Shi’I Islam. This is the most comprehensive course you can find online about Shi’i Islam as there will be 18 sessions to cover a wide variety of different aspects of this important faith tradition. Instructors are among the best academics in these fields. Each session will be 2 to 3 hours based on the plan of the instructor to be made up of activities and delivery as they see fit.

Interconnecting West and East Asia: A Transcultural Study of the Architecture of the Dead

In the wake of a growing interest in the global approach to architectural history, this session seeks to widen the scope of current research by conducting a transcultural and comparative analysis of the funerary construction practices in West and East Asia from the turn of the Common Era to the Early Modern Period. With the aim to open up a dialogue between scholars of the ancient and early modern period, and the area studies of West Asia (Islamic, Middle East, Mediterranean) and East Asia (China, Korea, Japan), we propose to investigate the connectivity between West and East Asian architecture through the lens of the “architecture of the dead,” including burial structures, tomb decorations, construction techniques, and the role funerary architecture played in negotiating the social relations.

Submission Guidelines:

Abstracts must be under 300 words.

The title cannot exceed 65 characters, including spaces and punctuation.

Abstracts and titles must follow the Chicago Manual of Style.

Only one abstract per conference by an author or co-author may be submitted.

A maximum of three (3) authors per abstract will be accepted.

Please join us virtually on Friday 4 June 2021, for the first workshop of the project: Arabic Books and Astronomy in Seventeenth Century Oxford. This project is a short-term pilot survey sponsored by St John’s College, University of Oxford, to analyse the Arabic and Persian MSS on astronomical topics held in two Oxford libraries, St John’s College, and the Bodleian. Its focus is notes written on the MSS by the seventeenth-century Oxford scholars who used them, in this case multilingual marginalia and interlinear notes by John Greaves, which we will annotate and digitize.

Call for Submissions | Council for British Research in the Levant (CBRL)

Submissions for the 2021 Best Article Prize for CBRL’s international peer-reviewed journal Contemporary Levant are now open. The award recognises excellent research and scholarship that engages with current and emerging issues in the Levant to advance our understanding of the region. A committee from CBRL and the editorial board of Contemporary Levant will select the best article from submissions which will be published in Contemporary Levant in autumn 2021. The prize winner will receive a one-year membership to CBRL and online access to Contemporary Levant for one year. They will also be presented with a certificate of recognition at the CBRL annual general meeting.
