Where faith meets modernity: cemevi and local Alevi politics

Abstract This article intends to shed light on the local politics of the Alevis by focusing on three different cemevis in Istanbul’s Gazi neighborhood. Based on a field study in the neighborhood between 2014 and 2015 and eventually revisiting it in 2019, we analyze the local political dynamics with regard to different cemevis.

The Revival of Twelver Shi’i Tafsīr in Early Modern and Modern Times: Three Case Studies | The Institute of Ismaili Studies

According to the doctrine of early Imami Shi’ism, the authority to interpret the of the Qur’an belongs exclusively to ʿAlī and his descendants, the Imams. Consequently, most Tafsīrs written in Twelver Imami circles after the Occultation of the twelfth Imam are essentially comprised of traditions attributed to the Imams. Yet, an impressive revival of the Imami Tafsīr can be observed in the Ilkhanid period, and even more so during the Safavid era in Iran, in the context of interfacing between Imami Shi’ism, Sufism and philosophy.

Indians appear in Persian painting long before the Safavid period (1501-1722), either as characters in illustrations of the Shahnameh of Ferdowsi or Khamsa of Nizami or as unidentified labourers, elephant jockeys and the like. Over the course of the 16th and 17th centuries the Persian depiction of Indians expanded to include portraits and works in the Indian style.
