1.Call for Papers
The Changing Nature of Family and Marriage in Contemporary Iran:

Over the past few decades, Iran has experienced a dramatic change in courtship practices and in the institution of family. The Changing Nature of Family and Marriage in Contemporary Iran is a conference devoted to an exploration of the latest findings in this area. Papers will examine a variety of issues such as marriage and divorce laws vs. actually existing power and decision-making processes in the family, the role of the extended family, definitions of masculinity and femininity vs. the lived experience of individuals; gender disparity, variations in religious communities, such as in the Sunni, Baha’i, Jewish, and Armenian families, family economics, especially unemployment, underemployment, and female employment, and social justice. Papers will also look at the growing rates of street children (both Afghan and Iranianchildren) and child prostitution, the changing nature of temporary marriage, marital commitment, cohabitation (white marriages) and grey marriages (separated couples living together).
The conference is an international interdisciplinary venue open to all academics and researchers. We do encourage graduate students to submit abstracts. Papers can be from a variety of disciplines such as History /Sociology, Gender Studies, Psychology, Economic, Media and Performance Studies, and Religious Studies.
Abstracts should be in English, 1-2 page maximum (500-650 words). Please also include a short CV or Bio.
We will provide meals for all participants at the conference and local transportation. Priority will be given to individuals whose research was conducted in Iran in the last two decades. There may also be an all-Persian workshop, depending on the abstracts received.

Call for applications
The coins, possibly the most valuable exchange medium in human history until the modern age, are important primary source for historical research. Of special interest are numismatic remains from border and crossroad areas, either contested by the different powers or located on major trade and migration roots. One of the most important areas of this type on the Eurasian continent is Central Asia, a vast geographical region boarded by the Caspian Sea on the west and today’s Xinjiang in the east, north Kazakhstan in the north and south Afghanistan in the south.
This call for application invites scholars to submit their proposals for the memorial session for the late Dr. Boris D. Kochnev (1940-2002), one of the leading scholars of the pre-Mongol numismatic research of Central Asia. The session will include either one or two panels and will be held during the 14th Conference of Asian Studies in Israel at The Hebrew University of Jerusalem (May 23-24, 2018).
The session under the working title Central Asia as a Civilizational Crossroad through the Lenses of Numismatics: 9th-15th Centuries is being organised in order to discuss and highlight the impact and the contribution of numismatics for the historical research of Central Asia during its pre-Mongol (starting with the 9th century – the early Karakhanid rule), Mongol and Temürid periods of its history. The proposals should address Central Asia not as a static geographic entity, but one involved in constant dynamic relations with the areas and cultures outside the region, as well as its own cultural, religious and ethnic diversity.
The proposed presentations can deal with, but are not limited, to the following issues:
- interrelations of the numismatic remains and the historical sources
- contribution of numismatics to the analysis of the political and the economic history
- contribution of numismatics to the analysis of the history of cross-Eurasian migrations of humans, technologies and diseases
- digital technologies in contemporary numismatic research
Technical information
Presentations. Scholars are expected to give a presentation of 15-20 minutes. The working language of the session is English.
Time, location and accommodation. The conference will take place on May 23-14 2018 in Jerusalem,. The participants will be provided accommodation (2 nights). Yet, the transportation expenditures are on the participants. If you need an invitation letter for the visa to Israel, please contact the organisers in time.
Deadline. Please send your proposals (title and a short abstract up to 300 words) to Mr. Ishayahu Landa, the convener of the memorial session, until 15 September 2017. The information on the selection of the speakers will be sent until 30 September 2017.
Publications. The publication of the papers in a memorial volume or journal section is under consideration.

One of the questions raised today by some Egyptian religious authorities is on the lawfulness and relevance of using intellectual tools foreign to the Islamic tradition to read and interpret the Qurʾān and texts of the classic Islamic heritage. Is it permissible and appropriate to use contemporary human sciences to study the texts of the Arab-Islamic patrimony or should it be limited to the Ḥadīṯ? IDEO would like to contribute to this debate by studying the emergence of the Ḥadīṯ as the authority of knowledge in the Islamic sciences.

Bahrain Internet Shutdown Hits One Year Mark, Longest in Region’s History
As of 7pm tonight, Bahrain has shut down the internet in the village of Duraz every day for 365 days. This makes it one of the longest sustained internet shutdowns in the world. Since 23 June 2016, residents of Duraz have been reporting regular disruptions to internet services within the village.

Pakistan bombings: Many casualties in Quetta and Parachinar – BBC News
At least 24 people have been killed and many injured in bombings in the north and south of Pakistan, officials say. The first explosion in the city of Quetta killed at least 13 people. It happened when a suicide bomber in a car was stopped by police at a checkpoint.

2. MIDDLE EAST STUDIES LIBRARIAN
Brown University Library seeks collaborative and innovative candidates for the position of Middle East Studies Librarian. As part of the Library’s Research and Outreach Services Department, the Middle East Studies Librarian serves as the library’s liaison to Brown’s Middle East Studies Program and to other departments appropriate to the candidate’s qualifications. The Middle East Studies Librarian teaches research skills and strategies, offers instruction sessions in individualized or in group settings, responds to reference inquiries, collaborates with other library staff on digital projects, and continues to build outreach efforts to un-tenured and tenure-track faculty, and to postdocs. The Middle East Studies Librarian will work a 75% time schedule and the initial appointment is for a fixed 3-year period with the possibility of an extension.
The position is responsible for collection development, through purchase and gift, in designated subject areas and in all formats, with emphasis on vernacular language materials, in accordance with collection guidelines, curriculum alignment, and budgetary resources.
Required Qualifications:

- Graduate level degree in Middle East Studies, or related field (e.g. CompLit, Archaeology, Anthropology, History. Master of Library Science or Ph.D. in subject field preferred.)
- 3-5 years of related experience.
- Fluency in Arabic.
- Knowledge of the scholarly communications process (publishing, copyright, repositories, illustration sources).
- Experience with library research tools and resources relevant to the assigned subjects.
- Ability to work with researchers in a rapidly changing environment.
- Ability to work in a complex library organization with a strong service orientation.
- Knowledge of various software packages: MS Office; ArcGIS; Endnote (or other citation management software).
- Bibliographic knowledge of Persian, French, and Turkish.

The Iranian and Persian Gulf Studies program at the Oklahoma State University invites scholars pursuing research in any of the humanities and social sciences to submit abstracts for individual papers or complete panel proposals. Panel proposals should feature 3-4 paper presentations, with a chair and discussant, and should offer a title that reflects the panel theme. Abstracts should be between 150-200 words in length and include a title, 4-5 keywords, and the author’s name and affiliation. Four of the papers presented will be selected for publication in the journal of Anthropology of Contemporary Middle East and Central Eurasia. A $200 prize will be awarded to a student whose paper demonstrates significant research contribution to the Persianate World and/or Central Eurasia Studies.
The program concludes with a half-day workshop for graduate students pursuing research in this area on any topic in the social sciences or humanities. The workshop will include panels and discussions on conducting both field and archival research methods, publication strategies and relationships with publishers, networking among scholars in the region, and grant writing and funding opportunities.
The Fourth Middle East and Central Eurasia Ethnographic Film and Media Program of the European Association of Social Anthropologists (EASA) will take place during the conference and all participants are invited to attend.

Afghanistan: Deaths as suicide bombers hit Shia mosque
An attack at a Shia mosque in the Afghan capital of Kabul killed at least four people and wounded eight more on Thursday, security officials said. Two suspected attackers tried to enter the city’s Al Zahra mosque but were blocked by police, setting off a gun battle, Interior Ministry spokesman Najib Danish said.
